There is a school oi Scottish landscape painting which produces dull but worthy painting alter dull but worthy painting, works which are almost instantly iorgettable because there are so many in the same mould. It comes as a reliet, then, to see this exhibition, which is primarily oi landscapes, which really do have a breath 01 iresh air about them in the approach 01 the artist to picture-making, as well as in the subject matter.
Edinburgh born and trained, Dougie Muir has spent many years teaching painting in Hull. A health crisis six years ago, ioilowed by the opportunity to take early retirement, spurred him to make real what ior many people is a passing day-dream -to move to a waterfront house in Orkney. Always a strong coiourist, he has now developed his watercolours through his observation oi the Orkney landscape into a new bravura and Iucidity. Some oi the works break down space into a series oi overlaps and iuxtapositions oi startling colours— ultramarine, orange, lime -with a iacility and an ellect similar to some at Ben Irvin's small watercolours or gouaches.
in the main, though, space retains its integrity, but hardly ever does the use oi paint remain prosaically descriptive. Small oils show that the same coniidence can remain even when the medium demands more time and more working. The handlul oi non-landscapes- a series 01 images 01 a woman with a black hat— are not so successiul, as it here is some private obsession that has not yet been resolved. The iresh air seems to be the right place. (Hilary Robinson)
