I The Light. Close Lobsters and The Passlteepers Renfrew Ferry. 10pm. £4 on the door. The three bands featured tonight display the healthy variety of the Scottish independent scene. The Light‘s last gigat the Cotton Club picked up national press interest which will have done the current debut 12-inch ‘No Farewells‘ no disservice. Paisley‘s Close Lobsters are one of the more consistent of the C-86 bands (i.e. they haven't changed). and the Passkeepers‘ mad Scottish doggerel should be a joy to behold. A New Music World gig.

I Power of Dreams Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Like An Emotional Fish (see Fri 31 ) Power of Dreams are Irish. and are shaping up to be one of the rock groupsto watch in the 90s. but there the similarity

ends. Power of Dreams could have the effect that Echo and The Bunnymen or House of Love had in the 80s. but they‘re young and frontman Craig Walker projects an intensity. even on their recent Wire support slot. that might diminish with time. so catch them soon. The debut LP. Immigrants. Emigrants and Me. was on a lot of people‘s must-hear lists when it came out a few weeks ago.

I Ruby Blue and Louise Butkowski King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9.30pm. £4. Ruby Blue are making all the right moves for a band hoping to live up to the pressurising ‘band-most-likely-to‘ tag firmly rooted in major label territory. extra eXposure through supporting Van Morrison and Martin Stephenson. Radio l-friendly mainstream pop with a vaguely folky influence. Doesn‘t seem fair that the divine Miss Rutkowski. erstwhile singer with Glasgow‘s most pleasing soulsters Sunset Gun. hasn‘t had that attention. This is only her third solo gig though. so there's plenty oftime for justice tobe done. A New Music World gig.

The Primevals andThe Thanes Queen Margaret L'nion. University Gardens. 339 9784. 8pm. £4. Varied. but for my money. most enticing bill of the event. London opportunists My Jealous God effortlessly jump on the indie 'dance bandwagon with their groovy debut ‘Fverything About You'. and NMW furnish insatiable ravers with an early chance to see them north ofthe border. The Primevals' compelling blues will compare oddly. but no less groovily. with veteran sleaze-god Michael Rooney showing the young ‘uns a thing ortwenty about charismatic performance. And for those who remember with fond nostalgia the times when hardly a week went by without a Thanes gig in Glasgow, the authentic beatmasters make along overdue return. A New Music World gig.
