MILOU IN MAY
France, 1989) Michel Piccoli, Miou-Miou, Michel Duchaussoy, Harriet Walter, Dominique Blanc. 108 mins. When grandmother dies on her rambling estate in the South of France, it’s left to her son Milou (Piccoli) to assemble the family lorthe will: although he’d rather be exposing his hirsuteness to the Midi sun, catching crayfish in his own novel fashion, and generally making like an all-round earth spirit. The lamin arrive, ripe for a bout of bickering: fussy journalist brother Georges (Duchaussoy) and his English wife (Walter), Milou‘s snooty Parisian daughter (Miou-Miou) and his niece Claire (Blanc). As the in-fighting gets underway, alarums and excursions are heard in the distance; for this is May 1968, and sedition is in the air, as even the local undertaker downs tools for the impending revolution. Terrorised by visions of bloodthirsty communards stringing them up and laying waste the estate, the family ups sticks and takes to the bills for a night of embarrassment and discomfort.
There must be a good comedy to be made about the plight of the bewildered bourgeoisie in 1968, but this is not it. Malle uses the political background and all the potent resonances it still has in France to make some very obvious farcical points about hypocrisy, paranoia and other
middle-class mores. The film aims for the bite of ‘Bof’ and similar late-60s social tirades, but ends up like a cross between Brian Rix and Bunuel (whose collaborator Jean-Claude Carriere co-wrote the screenplay with Malle), with settings by Renoir pere - a pretty sure box-office cert here, then, as it has been in France. The performances are impeccable— Piccoli charmingly grizzly as the satyr-like old reprobate, Miou-Miou uncharacteristically frosty in period Balmain drag, and Harriet Walter doing an enjoyably eccentric turn as a King’s Road thespienne in her element in Piaf d'Orterritory. But the sexual satire — as the assembled company dabble in the chic new libertinism— is way off kilter: embittered lesbian Claire chains her nubile lover to the bedpost overnight and scowls balefully as the latter flies into the arms of a poetic young male revolutionary, but she herself is just waiting to rip her bra off for a bemused truck driver who happens to be passing through. It's the queasiest note in a film that tilts at the bourgeoisie by using the most bourgeois form of all - the well-made dinner party romp. If your idea of the perfect French film is ‘Sunday in the Country’ with bottoms. then this is probably the one you’ve been waiting for. (Jonathan Romney)

Californian 15 year-old Dolenzovernight becomes a nubile nymphet. much tudad Danza‘s consternation. Asadmiration from the local male teenfolk starts queuing round the block. the old man seeks the help of populist self-help shrink Shawn and mounts an increasingly incompetent surveillance campaign. Despite a few lines that would make the most stalwart People's Friend subscriber squirm with embarassment. this is a fairly enjoyable if predictable moralitv comedy for undcmanding youngsters. Francisco Rabal. 101 mins. lt's women on the verge of expoloitation time as Almodovar reveals his most provacative confection to date with a bare outline that reads more like mere sexist trash: male loony Banderas kidnaps porno queen Abri1.tics her to the bed. pumps her full ofdrugs and. lo. they fall in love. Look beyond the sordid details however and the film creates its own moral logic based on mutual need between two very damaged characters. 1n the end.
