Hangers? Aberdeen? Hearts? Celtic? Nobody? The Dons must be favourites; they won both the domestic cups last season and have at last persuaded McLelsh and Belt that they ought to stay in the North East. Not far behind, it not in front (not that I’d like to hedge my bets) will be Hearts and Celtic. The Jambos, replete with Derek Ferguson, will be busy adapting to a slightly more ponderous pattern in their play. They are strong in all areas of the field and should at least provide entertainment it not trophies.
Not having taken the advice that Lou Macari was rumoured to have given him — sell NlcStay and put the money on Rangers iorthe Championship — Billy McNelll is for once in an enviable position at the start at the season. A healthy showing against Everton conlirmed that there is much potential in the new look midlleld of Collins, Nicholas and McStay though an injured Hayes had less time to show his paces. The size of the crowd, 43,000, gave some indication of the depth of support that the beleaguered club can rely on. It remains to be seen whether Andy Walker can prove equal to the task of goal-scorer in-chiet that has been allotted him or whether the deep-pocketed club must shove its short hands down further and purchase a play-mate for him.

Dundee United as ever are relying on their own crop of youngsters, of whom Paddy Connolly and Ray McKinnon have shown most potential solar. Their strike-rate last season was hardly inspiring and it may be that the youngsters will have a lew lessons to team yet. Oh yes, Hangers, well; their abundance ol riches has landed them Hateley and Huistra who along with the impending Kuznetsov have got the champions' rivals quaking in their boots. As from Saturday the race will be on in earnest and viewed from this end of the season it looks one oi the most intriguing in years. (Ross Parsons)

I Race Days Greyhound racing takes place five nights a week and what better way to spend a fine summer evening losing a few tenners. or single notes on the odd dog. Race evenings are Mondays.
Tuesdays. Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays: there are ll) races on a Monday and Friday. 11 on aTuesday and Thursday and 12 on a Saturday. The first races commence at 7.45pm on every day other than Saturday when they get out oftheir traps at 7.30pm.
