PROPANE STORIES
Ofelia Rodriguez, Edinburgh College oi Art.
With painting as rich and lush as Angela Carter's prose, this leading Colombian artist has represented her country at the Venice Biennale. Paintings oi a woman's imaginary world are, paradoxically, ilrrnly meted in a woman’s experience oi her body. The canvas is a landscape where trees become animate, spouting blood, and cactuses develop breasts dripping
milk. Turned the other way up, a forked ,
tree trunk becomes a pair oi legs with menstrual blood -or, in another painting, a bandaged court jester’s cap.
This is a precarious world. Canvas is looseer stapled to its armature. Motifs swim in a groundless pool of rich colour. Sewing-pins and stitching hold the imagery in place in a fragile order which could slip, disintegrate or collide at any point. Making the picture into a window, strips of fabric cut with pinking scissors are glued around the painting’s edges. The bottom of a tree is severed with a zig-zag line, echoing pinking scissors. Elsewhere this motif reappears as teeth, or a crown turned upside down.
It is also a physical world. The tree trunk/iester's cap iorrns limbs lined with veins. Demarcated flat areas of

K .' . I ,‘../,\ \ \fl colour are slices of artery. The sequence of paintings are fitted ‘lniured Landscape'. A woman's lace is spliced in four and placed at each corner of the painting, the stitched-on image piercing the skin of the canvas. Pain is in evidence everywhere. Associated with nature and the profane, menstrual blood and breast milk are visible signs of woman’s potency. The paintings show how a woman can subversiver and deiightedly inhabit her surroundings.
