flame and Poussin: The Classical Vision oi Landscape Until 21 Oct. Standing at either end of the classical tradition - Poussin (1594—1665) was the founder o‘French Classicism and Cezanne (1839-1906) the master of Post-Impressionism — both artists shared a passionate desire to create order out of nature. Their relationship is explored through a selection of paintings. drawings and watercolours from collections all over the world.

Mayotte Magnus: Wri French Institute. Literary Francophile John Ardagh visited the homes oi France’s most iamous writers, and many oi the places which inspired them and other writers, while researching Writers’ France - A Regional Panorama. And he got distinguished landscape photographer Mayotte Magnus to take the photographs which bring the book to liie. Some 40 exquisite colour photographs and many black and white ones generously illustrate the book throughout, and now there is an opportunity to get a better look at them in an exhibition at the French Institute.
What is immediately striking about Magnus' landscapes is the extraordinary quality oi light and the varying colours oi the skies, always somehow appropriate to the picture’s subject. Monte Carlo's casino (hang-out oi Fitzgerald, Greene and Maugham) is set against a lush blue sky while the grimness oi industrial Havre — as depicted in Satre’s La Nausee - is reilected in heavy black clouds.
More bookish than art-loving, I was most drawn to the photographs oi writers’ homes. Proust's gloomy little room in Illiers/Combray looks solemn in grainy black and white. Quite the opposite is the sunny, flirtatious house which Colette made the subject of two books. She remembered it as ‘a house which only smiled on Its garden side’, and worried that it might one day lose its charm: ‘Both the house and garden are living still, I know; but what oi that, ii the magic has deserted them?’ Ii this exhibition is anything to go by, Colette
need not have ieared. The magic oi this, and oi many other historical literary scenes, is preserved ior posterity in the meticulous photography of Mayotte Magnus. (Miranda France)
