SEA CHANGE
Thomas Joshua Cooper, Itelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.
A concrete poem on one wall grounds the viewer in time and space. While the text names the seas surrounding Scotland it simultaneously makes the room into an arena, directing the viewer's interpretation and experience 01 the accompanying eight photoworks which are grouped in sequences ol twos and threes.
A Iandmass is inscribed with the traces and marks at human intent. Here the order oi things is reversed: Scotland is physically absent, but present through black and white photographs oi water taken at the extreme geographical compass points at the country, south, east, west and north. imaginatively, the physical expanse oI Scotland is unitied and experienced through its surrounding ‘sweli oI the sea’, a ‘quuld immensity’ (Cooper’s words) which is constant yet dynamic, changing but always the
same. While the eight photographs show still. blank, grey, brooding water caught at the moment when it turns in on itsell, creating movement- lines and ripples which extend beyond the edge oi the trame - nowhere is water recognisable. Long lilm exposure which records the trace at movement and a distinctive development process have given shiny water the texture oi a chalk drawing. Water has the substance oi gas, mist, or steam. The artist’s interpretation Is rendered through process and not through a commentary about tile or art. The ambiguous llux presented here becomes a metaphor for immensity, and also tor the properties oi water: a play on lorm and tormlessness. In this sense the exhibition is also a metaphor tor the process oi making art and the currents which make up consciousness. (Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
