OUT COLD
Out Cold (15) (Malcolm Mowbray, US, 1989) John Lithgow, Teri Garr, Randy Ouaid, eruce Mcoill. 89 mins. In this threadbare black comedy set in smalltown America, John Lithgow's Dave is a shy and bumbling butcher who mistakenly believes he has killed his partner Ernie (Mcoill) by accidentally locking him in the ireezer. The real culprit however is Ernie's sexy suburban wile Sunny, played by Teri Carr, who intends to drop Dave in it. At least that’s the plan until she's Iorced to become his partner in a cover-up when Bandy Ouaid's oddball private eye, whom she’d previously hired to lollow herwomanising husband, linds out a little more than she’d bargained tor.
The ensuing larcical attempt to hide and dispose ol the corpse is well trodden ground. Joe Orton orJohn Cleese will tell you that when it comes to extracting laughs irom an audience a dead person is often tar more uselul than any living asset. Here the still even has an ice cream cone stuck on to It, but not even that can sustain a lilm oi
such lundamental inadequacies. The characters are little more than outlines and lairly detestable ones at that, so there’s no reason why the audience should care about what happens to them.
British director Malcolm Mowbray (best known tor A Private Function) betrays his television roots, his lonnulalc direction leaving the potential in the Hitchcocklan plot unreallsed. A quick comparison with the Coen brothers‘ Blood Simple, shows what can be done and just how short oi the mark the current uttering ialls. The former is a stunningly cinematic, taut and darkly comic thrillerlhat’s tilled with imaginative twists; the latter a shallow, meandering and predictable atlair, held together by improbable seams and hollow laughter. It’s a tricky one, all right, trying to marry comedy with a darkervision, but Out Cold doesn't even come close. (All. Goodlellow)
