Jane MacAlIister: Twentieth Century Icon Series (In Deience oi Sensuality), Ash Gallery.
The start oi a series oi meditations, the exhibition consists of sets of Individually iramed snapshots oi the artist photographing her rellection naked or partly undressed. Her eyes coniront us. However, when taking the photos she was scrutinising hersell In the mirror in a closed narcissistic circle. The photos are overexposed, giving a white emulsion eitect; images are unclear; gold Iiesh seeps through, warm as candlelight. Throughout, a Madonna, Christ or Saint are superimposed, line drawings ol works by other artists. The Iris ol St Theresa’s eye is also the artist’s nipple; elsewhere the artist's breasts till the
same Saint's breasts, or the artist's pose echoes that at a superimposed Saint Sebastian. Julia Kristeva wrote of Christianity: ‘the conirontation of man with his image undergoes a transformation, becoming the solitary communion 01 hands clasped in prayer . . . introspection permitting an individual psychic space . . . introspection is always amorous: you love the One and the One loves you . . . reparatory sell-contemplation'.
in Christianity nudity can represent humility, the shedding oi worldly goods; innocence with the soul cleansed by confession; and in the case oi woman, sin or lust: her body is unclean, thanks to her we all must die. in this patriarchal order woman cannot enunciate her autonomy. Bernini’s Saint Theresa in Ecstacy ls passive, sexual; the Church Fathers look on. commenting.
The emphasis is on temporallty. Flesh is transient as are reiiections; the snapshot captures a moment in time. Sensuality here becomes art mediating between the physical and the metaphysical. The contradictions and paradoxes In Christianity iorthe lemaie viewer are potential ingredients for a rich art and there is scope to widen the symbolic vocabulary. At the same time a third layer of commentary either through imagery or captions ls needed in orderto work towards an adequate reading at lemaie sensuality and iconography. (Fiona Byme Sutton).
