ll they really wanted a party, the Scottish League should have invited those with most reason to celebrate - the Old Firm, Celtic and Rangers, who overthe years have divided the League Championships between them in a way that any sell-respecting Godlalher would envy. The pair of them have taken the trophy 76 times out 01 a possible 93. Only a handiul oi other teams have managed to get their names squeezed onto the trophy. Certainly, a match between the two Glasgow giants would engender more interest than any other as a centenary celebration bash.
Instead the sense 01 history will be provided by 85 year-old ex-Ranger Bob McPhail, who will hand overthe cut-glass decanter, more reminiscent 01 a game show than a show game, to the winners. The manager oi the League XI, Jim McLean, has certainly had a more cosmopolitan pool to choose irom than anyone trying a similar tasIt overthe past century,
which should add considerably to the game's appeal. As well as the Rangers contingent oi Anglos, now swelled by Mark l-lateley, there are the Dutch Oons, the Irish lrom Celtic, a Yugoslav lrom McLean’s own United and one or two Scottish players as well. The Scots in the line up, on both sides, will be eagerto impress Mr Roxburgh belore the autumn sweep out, which he may leel is in order prior to the start at the European Championship campaign on 12 September.
Meanwhile, the League have brought out the ultimate ‘souvenir oliishial’ programme The First 1OO Years penned by Bob Crampsey, which promises to reflect the author’s passion Iorthe game's trivial inlormation as well as a scholarly approach to the history oi Scotland’s Football League. I Airdrle v Stranraer or Berwlclt Rangers Broomfield, Airdrie. 7.30pm.
I Ounlerrnllne v Albion Rovers East End Park, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline. 7.30pm. Alas poor Jim, the most accomplished poet ever to manage a Premier Division club, has departed. So ends an era at East End Park.

I Rangers v East Stirling or Oumbarton
lbrox Stadium. Glasgow. 7.30pm. A chance for Souness's glittering array of talent to disgrace themselves against lowly opposition. who will doubtless be treating this as their cup-final.
I Oueen's Park or East File vaerdeen Hampden Park, Glasgow or Bayview, Methil. 7.30pm. Aberdeen are used to winning at Hampden these days and should be confident of going through against either team.
Wednesday 22

I Glasgow 261 Tigers v Peterborough Shawfield Stadium, Rutherglen Road, Glasgow. 3pm. £3.50 (£1.50). The southern visitors are still hanging in there for a place in the play-offs. Glasgow, who are three places above them, may find it hard going against Peterborough's Danish and Australian stars.
