Cricket’s briel sojourn in the sun is almost over. Often, itseems as though the sport has barely struggled out lrom the shadows ol the lootball season belore it is thrust back into obscurity again; particularly so this yearwith the Italian job in lull swing throughoutJune and early July. Although tor a while there was a spell when Scottish cricket emerged in a glare at back page headlines after beating Northants, this proved to be a llash in the pan and their big hope at taking the scalp at Essex and progressing to the second round at Nat West Trophy will remain a mere pipe-dream until next season.
The national side still have two matches left, against Ireland and the MCC. The lirst at which takes place at Watsonians' ground on 11—13 August, with the last lixture ot the season away at Lords. Both matches were closely lought last year with Scotland beating a weak MCC side all the last ball in a rain-sudden match at Greenock, while Ireland’s tenacious resistance led to a draw in Dublin and to the Scots missing their llight home. A repeat at these results would be a commendable way lor the Scottish XI to round oil a reasonably successtul season.
Meanwhile on the domestic lront, Grange have already avenged last season’s controversial loss oi the East League to Freuchie, alter the Edinburgh club had live points deducted tor breaching player registration rules. On top at their league success they have a chance to become the lirst Edinburgh club to clinch the double ol the East League and the Scottish Cup, since Heriot’s did it in 1978. Taking the tield againstthem on 26 August at Hamilton Crescent will
