THE REAL THING

Pursuit otthe Real, Art Galleries, Kelvingrove, Glasgow. An exhibition which claims to know where reality lies is almost bound to leel over-conlident. At a time when everyone else is more concerned with the relativity ol objects, with the symbolic or with the political as the most pressing and lruittul areas tor investigation, it is to the credit at the curator at this show, Tim Wilcox, that he has put together a very clear point at view in his selection at work. Whether the viewer then goes along with that point at view is another matter. It is a great pity that another i exhibition about realism, Approaches to Realism, curated by John Roberts, is i touring England with no venue tixed in Scotland. Why not? The two together map out an extremely important debate about the representation of lived experience. To see The Pursuit of the Real without knowing the work at the artists in Approaches to Realism is a bit
like judging lilms lrom the production at Holywood alone. Yes, these are real people that have been painted, but what we see is a representation of them as manipulated by each particular artist. Figure painting is not a kind of phrenology; it happens only in highly contrived situations; we can’t know these people and their lives. The work at Coldstream and Uglow—the mapping out at the temale body in the lite room — is done with a coldness and alienation lrom the model that is verging on the cruel. It is certainly as tar removed lrom the 'reality’ at daily lite as TV cop shows — unless you happen to be a life model. In short, the ‘reality' proposed is torthe most part highly partial (why are all the artists men? Where are Gwen John, Laura Knight, Joan Eardley? Why such an English show?) and sell-validating. In Robert's exhibition the opposite is the case, such as in Rasheen Araeen’s work on racism. There are some exceptions such as Stanley Spencer’s

Standing very close to most at his subjects, he seems to be exploring not so much their relationship as the distance and ditterence between people, with an intensity that at points is metaphysical — but also, in Large Interior, Paddington, leads to one at the most disturbing and problematic paintings by a living artist.
