From the beginning, the atmosphere is stiiling. Set in a medical room in Spandau prison, 1987, with the bloodless shadow oi Hitler‘s deputy, Hudoli Hess, in the hotseat, Andrew Dallmeyer‘s challenging new play demands that we examine the understandable urge to see a Nazi suiier.
Set against a stark background oi caged claustrophobia, Dallmeyer's production picks at the ingredients oi a puritanical mind, steeped in the Nazi theory oi invincible Aryan supermen lit to walk with the gods. Benny Young, oi ‘Chariots oi Fire', stepping into John McGlynn's shoes just a week beiore opening night, gives a brave and convincing periormance as Hess — his
singlehanded flight to Scotland in 1941 on a decoy peace mission, his capture and humiliation at the hands oi the British secret service and his suiiocation by iorty years oi dehumanising routine in Spandau. Andrew Dallmeyer and Judith Cadzow are Hess’s doctors, extractors oi his secret past, and witnesses oi a prisoner oi perception haunted by the suspicion oi Hitler’s involvement in Hess’s path to destruction. The image oi Hess as the bewildered puppet oi the world powers is taken to its extreme in a shocking re-interpretation oi Hess's ‘suicide' - dangled by the Allies irom a piece oi ilex, to the tune oi glasnost.
A stirring, sometimes moving portrayal oi a man exuding the unmistakable stench oi evil, and a curious sense oi dignity. (Kathleen Morgan)
