While most at Glasgow’s 1990 summer iestivals are happening tor the lirst time this year, the Festival at British Youth Orchestras has taken the chance to establish itseli over the past two yearsjn preparation iorthe big one. From eight concerts in 1988, it is now an impressive line-up oi seventeen concerts by sixteen diiterent orchestras, the lirst at the City Hall and all others at the Stevenson Hall oi the RSAMD. Special guests lrom abroad are the Estonia Youth Chamber Strings, who have had last minute visa problems, but should arrive in time ior their concert on Wednesday 15, which in a neat Soviet/British link includes the Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten by Estonian Arvo Part. New music leatures strongly throughout the series, which runs irom Saturday 11 August to Saturday 1 September. The Novello Youth Orchestra Award, to stimulate interest in contemporary music, enters its second year with several works by British composers, and the Opening Concert on 11 August by the National Youth Orchestra oi Scotland includes the premiere at Edward McGuire’s Glasgow Symphony. Other orchestras and ensembles performing include two youth jazz orchestras irom Essex and Strathclyde, the National Youth Wind Orchestra oi Great Britain and the National Children's Orchestra plus area orchestras irom England and Scotland, including the Strathclyde Schools Symphony Orchestra, who give the
