Bit of a teaser. this one ~ seems to be a gigin search of a band to play it. because Spamborskee reputedly split tip a few weeks ago. Let's hope the band were fibbing. for the sake of Minstrels and the well-being of (ilaswegian music and the planet in general.

Something Happens are an lrish guitar band. unaffected by indie dance. intent on making the 90s their own — except that Something l lappens are already on their second LP. the melodious and deserving Stuck Together With God's (ilue. Kith and Kin are one ofthe most hotly tipped bands around at the moment. retaining some of the rootsier elements of their predecessors. but heading in a rockier. more mainstream direction.

It was thought that we might have seen the last oi We Free Kings, but, as their gig with Jesse Baron and The Desperadoes shows, they‘re still very much with us. Singer Joe Kingman relates to me how the band‘s extensive gigging was becoming a greater and greater hardship, as playing live was costing them more money than they could earn. ‘We concentrated on busking last yearto get away irom the pressure oi doing gigs,’ he explains. The band had a good time busking across Europe, but the theft oi their van upon their return was a severe blow. They have laced adversity beiore. The loss oi their electric guitars early in their career (coniiscated because they couldn't aiiord to pay the rent ior their
practice room), iorced them to make do -
with what they had tell, and straight away We Free Kings were being hailed as a new Scottish band blending iolk and punk in the style oi The Pogues. That pigeonholing has annoyed Joe ever since. ‘We were playing with those instruments long beiore we

and it sounded shambolic, so everyone thought, “Ah! The Pogues!“.'
Their true sound will be heard at the Queen‘s Hall. but Joe modestly points out that they‘re not headlining the show. ‘The Desperadoes asked us to play last because according to Kevin at Avalanche we're more lively than them.’ (Alastair Mabbott)
