blood. As the splatter level rises. detective Elphick looks increasingly embarrassed by the amateurish mayhem erupting around him. The action highlight has a talking turd leaping out ofa toilet on the

attack. Dear. oh dear. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I Innocent Man (18) (Peter Yates. US. 1990) Tom Selleck, F. Murray Abraham. Laila Robins. 114 mins. This further instalment in a long line ofmisfiring Selleck big screen offerings has our Tom on the wrong end of rough justice as an unwitting innocent sent to prison by a pair of bungling and corrupt narcotics cops. Helping him adjust to the brutalities oflife on the inside is hardened fellow con F. Murray Abraham, and so Selleck emerges from his stretch made of considerably sterner stuff and looking for revenge on the crooked duo who sent him down. Prime-time Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood might have been able to carry this one off, but Selleck is unfortunately lacking in the steely resolve to pull itoff. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank. I Je. Tu, ll. Elle ( 15) (Chantal Akcrman. Belgium. 1974) Claire Wauthier. Niels Arestup. Chantal Akcrman. 85 mins. Akerman‘s second feature involves a taut circular narrative, passing through the singular personal pronouns. Akcrman herself (Je) writes a letter to her female lover (Tu). and encounters a lorry-driver (Il) travelling to see Elle in person. Tautly structured investigations into sexual identity and urban alienation. I Look Who’s Talking (12) (Amy lleckerling. US. 1989) John Travolta. Kirstie Alley. Olympia Dukakis. 97 mins. In Travolta's much-hyped comeback he plays stand-in papa to Alley‘s first baby. but is quicker to meet approval from the little brat. via the voiced-over musings of one Bruce Willis. than he is from its confused and binkered mama. Crass. lowbrow and thus extremely popular comedy whose sole redeeming feature is the natural charm of the trusty Travolta. But any movie whose idea of a comic setpicce means filmimg a foetus inside the womb with the dreary Willis intoning on the soundtrack just doesn't come near the ball park. I Madame X (15) (David Rich. US. 1965) Lana Turner. Constance Bennett. John Forsythe. 10(lmins. One time wealthy widow (Turner) disappears and ends up on a murder rap where she is defended unwittingly by her own son. Luxuriant wallow in big screen emotions. Strathclyde: UCI East Kilbride. I Nine-And-A-Hall Weeks ( 18) (Adrian Lyne. US. 1985) Mickey Rourke. Kim Basinger. 113 mins. Divorcee Basinger becomes a slave to love and lust when she succumbs to the stubbly charms of commodities broker Rourke. Empty-headed and disturbing designer bonking. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. I Nuns on the Run ( 12) (Jonathon Lynn. US. 1989) Eric Idle. Robbie Coltrane. Janet Suzman. 95 mins. There's a little more to this slapstick comedy than the title suggests Idle and Coltrane. both in top form. two small time crooks who bungle their final heist up and soon find themselves taking refuge disguised as nuns in a Convent. The unpredictable gags that follow easily surpass the high standards of the above-average Carry-On film. It has proved immensely popular across the Atlantic too. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: UCl. I Pretty Woman ( 15) (Garry Marshall. US. 1991)) Richard Gere. Julia Roberts. Ralph Bellamy. 120 mins. In this hugely succesful comedy-romance. Gcre stars as an unfeeling financial wheeler-dealer discovering he is human after all when he spends a week in the company of Roberts‘ downhomc goodtime girl. Conversely. she rediscovers her self-esteem by flawlessly carrying off the role of his high society companion. so the audience can feel happy for both of them. The outline might be as hackncyed as they come. but television veteran Marshall has just the

right lightness of touch. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Dominion. Odeon. UCl. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank. UCl East Kilbride.

I The Punisher(18) (Mark Goldblatt. US. 1990) Dolph Lundgren. Jeroen Krabbe. Louis Gossett Jnr. Kim Miyori. 90mins. Humourless cross between Mad Max and Death Wish has Lundgren as hero-cop-turned-mental-after-the- murder-of—his-family Frank Castle. playing vigilante against the Italian and Japanese mafias. Macho nonsense. Edinburgh: UCI.

I Robocop 2(18) (lrvin Krershner. US. 1990) Peter Weller. Nancy Allen.Tom Noonan. Belinda Bauer. Dan O‘lierlihy. 116 mins. A special preview ofthe long-awaited sequel to Rohm‘op. This time the cops are on strike and only one man/machine (Weller) stands between the citizens of Detroit and the heavily armed henchmen of the ‘Nuke’ drug barons. To be reviewed when the film opens in October. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I Romauld and Juliette (Coline Serreau. France. 1989) Daniel Auteuil. Firmine Richard. 118 mins. Winning serio-comic love story in which hard-nosed business exec falls for his black cleaning lady

Richard and as their affair breaks down both class and racial barriers. her shrewd insight into the absurdity ofcorporate power-broking helps him to discover a new set of more worthwhile values. Following on from her huge French hit Trois Hommes [it Ull (‘ouffin (successfully Americanised as Three Men And/1 Baby) Serreau comes up with another insightful and funny examination ofthe way we live now. though it doesbear a highly coincidental resemblance to the outline of Pretty Woman! Glasgow: GF'I‘. I She's Out 01 Control ( 12) (Stan Dragoti. US. 1990) Tony Danza. Amy Dolenz. Wallace Shawn. 97 mins. With a little help from her pop‘s girlfriend speccy Californian 15 year-old Dolenz overnight becomes a nubile nymphet. much to dad Danza‘s consternation. As admiration from the local male teenfolk starts queuing round the block. the old man seeks the help of populist self-help shrink Shawn and mounts an increasingly incompetent surveillance campaign. Despite a few lines that would make the most stalwart People‘s Friend subscriber squirm with embarassment. this is a fairly enjoyable if predictable morality comedy for undemanding youngsters. Glasgow: Odeon. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. UCI East Kilbride.

I Spaced Invaders (PG) (Patrick Read Johnson. L'S. 199(1) Douglas Barr. Royal Dano. Ariana Richards. 9() mins. ()n the 511th anniversary of ()rson Welles‘ original

War Of The Worlds radio broadcast a gang ofcuddly aliens land on liarth to begin ; their quest for world domination from the unlikely base of Big Bean. Illinois. ()nly the intervention of Sheriff Barr and curmudgeonly farmer Royal Danocan save the planet from Lieutenant Blaznee (a fashionable ‘Jack Nicholson in space' it says here) and his pumpkin-headed mob ofextraterrestrials. Glasgow; Cannon The Forge. ()deon. Edinburgh: ()deon. L'Cl. Strathclyde: ()deon Ayr. ()deon Hamilton. L'Cl Clydebank. L'Cl East Kilbride. WMR Film Centre.

Special preview screening of Midlcr's latest film. which will open in the autumn. has her as a wise-cracking bartender with a penchant for the good times who single-handedly raises her daughterJenny (Alverado). Though the two become inseperably close Stella gradually realises that Jenny's father will be able to give her

a much more secure future than she can manage to and so she prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice. To be reviewed in full at a later date. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I Throne of Blood ( 15) (Akira Kurosawa. Japan. 1957) Toshiro Mifune. lsuzu

Yamada. Minoru Chiaki. 11() mins. It‘s Shakespeare's Scottish play.

Japanese-style. as samurai Mifune is spurred on by his wife and the spiritsto murder his best friend and then his master. Although the barest plot and striking images remain from the original. Kurosawa‘s atmospheric settings in mist-shrouded forests give the film a brooding power. Glasgow: Gl’l'.

I Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! ( l8) ( Pedro Almodovar. Spain. 1990) Antonio Banderas. Victoria Abril. Francisco Rabal. 101 mins. It's women on the verge ofexpoloitation time as Almodovar reveals his most provacative confection to date with a bare outline that reads more like mere sexist trash: male loony Banderas kidnaps porno queen Abril. ties her to the bed. pumps her full ofdrugs and. lo. they fall in love. Look beyond the sordid details however and the film creates its own moral logic based on mutual need between two very damaged characters. in the end. Almodovar manages to wring moments of real emotional resonance out of the most unpromising material. so we should give him a little credit even ifsome doubts remain. Edinburgh: Cameo. ITotal Recall ( 18) (Paul Verhoeven. US. 199()) Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sharon Stone. Michael lronside. 109 mins. See feature. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Salon. Edinburgh: ()deon. L'Cl. ITriumph Of The Spirit( 15) (Robert M. Young. US. 1989) Willem Dafoe. Edward James Olmos. Robert Loggia. 120 mins. Based on the true story of Greek boxer Salamo Arouch (played with some integrity by the always excellent Dafoe ). this sobering. not-too-sentimental aCCount traces the deportation of the family to Poland's Nazi death camps and chronicles the events whereby he was forced to take part in murderous exhibition bouts for the entertainment of German officers. A grim and important testimony to the powerof human endurance. one emphasised by the knowledge that the cast and crewspent four months filming on the original locations in Auschwitz. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I The Vanishing ( 15) (George Sluzier. Netherlands. 1988) Bernard Pierre Donnadieu. Gene Bervoets. Johanna 'l'er Steege. 106 mins. Sluzier‘s film not only boasts the last decades most convincing movie villian but is invested with a very affecting undercurrent ofcmotional vulnerability. Edinburgh: l-‘ilmhouse. IVenus Peter( 12)(lan Sellar. tIK. 1989) Ray McAnally . Gordon R. Strachan. David llayman. 92 mins. Affecting adaptation shot on Orkney of Scots writer Christopher Rush's impressionistic A Twelve/month AndA Dav. set in a fishing village in the 195lls. ()nc of McAnally's last roles casts him beautifully as the sympathetic grandfather of Peter. played by nine-year-old Strachan (who is not to

be confused with the diminutive Scottish midfield genius) in this moving study ofa dying community seen through the eyesof a young boy. Central: MacRobcrt Arts Centre.

I Where The Heart Is ( 15) (John Boorman. US. 1990) Dabney Coleman. L'na Thurman. Christopher Plummer. 107 mins. See review. Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: ()deon.
