Liz Fritsch, Royal Scottish Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh.
There are only a handlul at places in the whole oi Scotland that regularly show good crait work. That makes it doubly exciting to see an excellent exhibition oi work by Liz Fritsch just inside the doors at the museum in Chambers Street— not particularly known as a craft venue.
Fritsch has been showing her pots nationally and internationally ior almost two decades now, and will become more widely tamiliarto anyone who buys a 26p stamp - she's one at iour British potters being celebrated in a new series. Her pots break away irom the strong tradition (established originally in this country by Bernard Leach) ior ceramics which are heavy, earthy, thick and mud-coloured -the ‘truth to materials' doctrine which was current in the middle years oi this century. Instead, more inspired by the work oi Lucy Rie, Fritsch's pots are elegant, delicate, with meticulous attention paid to getting the painted-on colours just right. Many oi the pots are oval in section, as it gently ilattened, giving a strangely two-dimensional leel; these are evidently to be placed against something, on a wall-shell, rather than on a table. The intricate designs painted onto the pots compliment the overall shape; the colours are the

result oi repeated iirings and experiment.
It is to be hoped that the Museum will be mounting more crait shows of this calibre, and that other venues will wish to compete with exhibitions by similarly committed makers. (Hilary Robinson) l
