GLASGOW Fridays

I Delirium 7 at Rooftops (Secrets Lounge). 11pm—late. £2.50. It‘s the club they‘re all calling ‘The Big Friday Alternative’. Well. the organisers are anyway. The serious doom and gloom are to be toned down a little from now on, with more glam rock. punk. Bowie. etc. Bet you still won't see the goths smiling.

I Dream at Papa Doc’s. Cumbernauld. 10pm—3am. £2.50. Club entrepreneurs The Freedom Association launch an attempt to make something of a nightclub ofwhat has hitherto been rather a ned's paradise. All sorts ofclever lighting effects. projectors and strobes are promised to accompany what sounds like an interesting mixture of house and balearic beats. Chill out. man.

I Joy at the Sub Club. 11pm—5am. £3.50. Though still one of Glasgow‘s most popular c1ubs.Joy‘s been a little quiet of late. but some special events and guest DJs are promised to liven it up duringthe summer months. There may be a heavier emphasis on their dance and house roots and there‘ll certainly be a few more ofthe live sets they've started to feature overthe last couple of weeks. Unless you‘re particularly good at ligging. you‘ll be out of luck on Fri 3 though. when Slam are throwing a special 2nd Birthday Party it's invites only.

I Three Amigos at Tin Pan Alley.

I 1pm—late. £4 (£1 .50 with leaflet). Aimed squarely at the student population and playing new wave indie the Charlatans. Cud and James are reference points - this newish club is more ‘traditionally alternative'. less ‘techno-house dance' I‘m told. Whether the summer hols will prove to be the best time to get a studentyclub offthe ground remains to be seen.

Saturdays

I Burnout at Rooftops. l 1pm—late. £2.50. 1 was pleasantly impressed with Burnout. which has a healthy policy of puttingon unsigned bands with a cosy club atmosphere of the Secrets lounge (including plenty of soft sofas forthose who frug too wildly to collapse on). Music is primarily indie faves. with a slight emphasis on the Manchester scenc;some have been reminded of the Kes Club. More developments and bigger bands are promised soon.

I Club Hacienda 11.30—7am. £5. A bit elusive. this one. but some intrepid detective work has eventually tracked down the details of Glasgow's newest club. rising from the ashes of the old Knightsbridge. As far as I can make out. there doesn‘t seem to be any actual link with the rather more famous. dizzyingly trendy one in Mane-land. except that things are aimed squarely at the ravers. with house and Italian techno beingthe order of the day. ()pen Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays. there‘s a Spanish-Mexican theme and a giant fibreglass horse on the dancefloor. Saturday nights feature an Under-18s disco from 7pm—l 1pm for hip little bruvvers (£3. or £2 with a ticket ) and live PAs for oldsters later on. The hopping stops at 5am. and breakfast is served until 7am visitors could spend the night here. in fact. and save the expense of a hotel room. ifthey've got the energy.

I Helter Shelter at the Mayfair.

1 1pm—3am. £1.50. Recapture that authentic 60s seaside riot atmosphere as the city‘s mods and rockers fight to stay upright on the dancefloor the size ofa Twister board. The most confused clientele this side of the Shimmy. but at least they’ve cut down on the twenty-minute guitar solos.
