The Adventures oi Endill Swiit: Stuart McDonald (Canongate £8.95)
The story is about a boy called Endill who is sent away to a really weird
school called Epitaph. He hates it! Surrounding the school is an eel-inlested moat. In the library lurks a book-creature who makes buildings out of books. The corridors are toll of crazy goings-on: pupils trudging along wearing lead boots, a hall-ghost scientist, the matron riding a motor bike and an odd-job man inside a protective glass case. In the classrooms there is a sleeping teacher who talks in rhyme, a maths teacher who is forever writing on the walls when he uses up his blackboard space, and a chemistry teacher with a multi-coloured beard. The headmaster has a terocious temper and as a punishment tor not wearing tartan
; shoes, he makes pupils walkthe entire
length at the longest corridor wearing lead boots. I thought the book was brilliant because Endiil has lots at exciting adventures. The illustrations are iantastic and I could hardly wait to lind out it Endill escapes from this beastly place. I read it through twice over. (James Weddell, aged 9)
