SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Charlie Nicholas is not the only star returning to Celtic Park these days. On Saturday 21 July a host oi them; Wet Wet Wet, Taylor Dayne, Lisa Stanslield and Patti Austin will be there to celebrate the opening of the Special Olympics. Marching proudly into the stadium will be 2200 mentally handicapped young men and women lrom 31 countries, who will be competing in the events held throughout Strathclyde over the coming week.
Despite the ‘Olymplc' lag the games are restricted to European and some Middle-Eastern competitors. Glasgow, it Is hoped, will mark a watershed In thelrdevelopment. First held In Brussels In 1981, the event grew In stature when It surfaced again In Dublin louryears later. This time, with the largest over number at countries and competitors taking part, It Is hoped that the games will be placed on a secure looting lor the iuture.
Just as it was lor Scotland in the recent World Cup, the emphasis at these games is on participation rather than winning. Each eventwlll be judged by a panel and each competitor given a skill rating In order that anomalies In the levels oi ability can be balanced out. The organisation oi the event has been a tremendous undertaking and, it all goes well, It can only boost the chances at other major
sporting events coming to Scotland. (Boss Parsons)
