i I The Stretcheads and Swirling Pig Dervish l lrn Bru Rox. 3rd Fye (‘entre.350 Sauchiehall Street. 332 7521. 9pm. £3. Tickets from 3rd Eye. ‘Musical' insanity for those who aren‘t too concerned about textured sound. progressive chord changes or subtly layered lyrical meaning. and who don‘t care too much about keepingtheir aural sensibilitiesintact either. in other words. a night out forthe \‘Oil's. See preview.

I Balaam and the Angel Mayfair. 490 Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. 7pm. £4.50 pltis booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin Records. Union Street. In their day. Balaam and the Angelcould fuse melodic pop and doomy intensity to present the acceptable face ofgothie rock. btit sadly. times change. and now the lads have taken to posing nude in a trite attempt to garner attention. Clearly the sign ofa band past their sell-by date.

I Blues'n‘Trouble and Daisy Taylor King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. 272 St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 10pm.£4.50.lf1hada fraction of a fraction ofa penny for every time Blues‘n"l‘rouble have played live. I'd make Terry Wogan look like a dosser.

I4 yer-popular and always enjoyable. tonight they‘re supported by slide guitar virtuoso Daisy Taylor.

I Capone and the Bullets Traders. Glassford Street. 552 5826. 10pm. Free. This issue’s ‘welcome return of. . .‘spot. ’After mentioning in the last issue that the Bullets were no more. they promptly reformed as a honed-down. tightened-up five piece. The brass section has been reduced. btit this shouldn't hamper the grooviness of their live performances.

I The Chicago Way Dance Palace. Glasgow Green. 7.30pm. £2 (£1). Tickets from box office. Glasgow Green. 550 0033. A ‘rock opera' presented by Scottish Opera. Just what it entails. we'd rather not contemplate.

The Orchids are elevated beyond the realms ofmediocrity by virtue ofJames llackett's agonisingly lovely vocals. while The Wake should forever hold a place in our hearts asthe band responsible for last year'sdippy. trippy ‘Crush the Flowers‘ single.
