Occasionally shrill and self-pitying autobiographical movie. worth staying with for its insights into the creative pressures of the contemporary industry but never quite becoming the ()It() 0 Mezzo its maker so obviously intended. I Touch 01 Evil (18) (Orson Welles. US. 1958) Orson Welles. Charlton Heston. Marlene Dietrich. Janet Leigh. 108 mins. Welles made a return to Hollywood studio employment after a decade in the wilderness with this classic baroque thriller. In a sleazy border town. the murder ofa Mexican bigwig causes friction between corrupt local detective Hank Quinlan (Welles himself) and upright Mexican narcotics agent Vargas (Heston). Amidst a gallery of Wellesian grotesques and expressionist camcrawork the dialogue between truth and justice becomes progressively more garbled. ITremors (18) (Ron Underwood. US. 1990) Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward. Finn Carter. 96 mins. In this spirited homage to Fifties monster movies. the remote Nevada town of Perfection is menaced by huge burrowing worms that gobble up anyone unfortunate to cross their path. It‘s left to handymen Bacon and Ward plus assorted townsfolk to save the day and get through the plot exposition without cracking up at the agreeably knowing dialogue in this splendid blend ofstraight faces and off-the Richter-scale daitness. I Trop Belle Pour Toil Too Beautiful For You/(18) (Bertrand Blier. France. 1989) Gerard Depardieu. Josiane Balasko. Carole Bouquet. 91 mins. Massive French hit offers a characteristic twist on the old eternal threesome scenario. Dcpardieu plays the succesful owner of a car showroom. envied by all for his beautiful wife (Bouquet). who falls in love with his dumpy secretary (Balasko). A film of commendable openness about the needs of the senses and men‘s facility for emotional expression. its true achievement is how it turns the stuffof farce into an intense hybrid ofwistful comedy and romantic passion. One of McAnaIly‘s last roles casts him beautifully as the sympathetic grandfather of Peter. played by nine-year-old Strachan (w ho is not to be confused with the diminutive Scottish midfield genius) in this moving study oi a dying community seen through the eyesof a young boy. I Vincent and Theo (15) (Robert Altman. UK/Nethcrlands. 1990) Tim Roth. Paul Rhys. 140 mins. The obsession with Van Gogh's art and madness manifests itself again as Robert Altman ponderously and at undue length traces Vincent’s frustrated career and working relationship with brother Theo. Tim Roth plays the artist as a demented clown. stomping off for a day‘s painting to Gabriel Yared‘s thrashing soundtrack and eating as much paint as he gets on canvas. Cinematically it might have its moments. but essentially this is art history as a tabloid journalist might see it. Glasgow: GFT. I When Harry Met Sally ( 15) (Rob Reiner. US. 1989) Billy Crystal. Meg Ryan. Carrie Fisher. 95 mins. Thoughtful sex comedy has Crystal (Harry). Ryan (Sally) and Reiner on top form. with highly entertaining results. Nora Ephron‘s witty screenplay intelligently ponders the possibility of male/female friendship with or without romance. and guess which side wins. . .Annie Hall for the late 1980$.with now-famous faked orgasm. In 1949 LA. the humans live alongside the Toons. cartoon characters working in movies. Animated star Roger Rabbit hires private dick Hoskins to keep tabs on his wife. but he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the future of Toontown itself. An amazing technical achievement for the interaction of cartoons and live action. this box office winner spoofs the film noir genre while milking the Tex Avery-style cartoon violence for all it's worth. Nine year-old Luke is warned by his Norwegian granny about the everpresent threat posed by the existence of witches. which isn‘t much help actually because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets himself changed into a mouse for his pains. A pleasing adaption of Roald Dahl‘s children’s story has director Roeg (in unusually straightforward manner) creating a superior kids movie that has you rooting for the mice all the way. Lots of fun.
