I Lord Of The Files (15) (Harry Hook. US. 1990) Balthazzar Getty. Chris Furrh. Daniel Pipoiy. 95 mins. Second adaptation of William Golding‘s modern classic eschews the path followed by Peter Brook's groundbreaking 1962 effort to controversially transpose the action to a contemporary group of American military cadets marooned on a desert island and soon replaying the age-old drama ofman‘s essential savagery. Talented young English film-maker Hook's beautifully shot version lays the emphasis on the allegorical elements ofthe tale. perhaps at the expense of fully developingthe characters. but remains a brave attempt all the same. Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: UCI Craig Park.
I Manon Des Sources (PG) (Claude Berri. France/‘ltaly. 1986) Yves Montand. Daniel Auteuil. Emmanuelle Beart. 114 mins. Ten years after the demise ofJean dc Florette. the Soubeyrans run a prosperous carnation farm. Jean‘s daughter has grown into an alluring young woman and sets out to wreak her revenge. Steering this epic rural saga towards the realms of Greek tragedy. this is a fulland satisfying second half that explores the suffering of the guilty as they pay a crippling penance for man's greed and envy. The production values are as high as ever and Auteuil assumes Depardieu's mantle in his development from glaikit idiot to broken-hearted suitor. Glasgow: GET.
I Monsieur Hire (15) (Patrice Leconte. France, 1989) Michel Blane. Sandrine
.\Bonnaire. 82 mins. An elusive
neighbourhood recluse (Blane), whiles away his evenings spying on his alluring neighbour Alice (Bonnaire). Gradually. he becomes entangled in an unsolved murder and a passionate romance. Based on a Simenon novel this sensitive and enthralling film, which was almost overlooked in Britain. Glasgow: OFT. I Mountains at The Moon (15) (Bob Rafelson. US. 1989) Patrick Bergin,1ain Glen. Fiona Shaw. Richard E. Grant. 135 mins. His early 19705 career saw Rafelson as a man at home with the murkier depths of the American psyche. but here he is with an ambitious African adventure. that centres on the expeditions of Sir Richard Burton (Bergin) and John Hanning Spcke (Glen) in search of the source of the Nile as a barometer of the Victorian age, where tremendous scientific and intellectual energy nestled with racist attitudes and moral repressiveness. While the central relationship isn‘t as moving as it mightbe. there‘s still a wealth of incident and intelligence to grab the attention. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Music Box (15) (Costa-Gavras. US, 1990) Jessica Lange, Armin Mueller Stahl. Frederic Forrest. 126 mins. In Costa-Gavras. Berlin prize winner Lange plays a successful Chicago lawyer whose Hungarian immigrant father (Armin Mueller Stahl) is threatened with the loss of his American citizenship when it comes to light that he is suspected of collaborating with the Hungarian fascists in wartime atrocities against Budapest Jews. Believing unswervingly in her dad‘s innocence she takes on the task of defending him herself. yet asthe courtroom testimonies pile up heinous accusations. the jury's growing doubts are matched only by her own fears. Stimulating and finally moving combination of Hollywood family drama and the director‘s customary politiciscd grit. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. I My Lilo AS A Dog (PG) (Lasse Halstrom. Sweden. 1985) Anton Glanzelius. Manfred Server. Anki Liden. 101 mins. Wholly captivating rite ofpassage tale set in Sweden during the 1950s. 1 welve-year-old lngemar copes with his

She’s Out OI Control (12) (Stan Dragoti, US, 1990) Tony Oanza, Amy Doienz, Wallace Shawn. 97 mins. This is the irind oi movie Hollywood producers can and do dream up over a swilt daiquiri at a West Coast country club. It has glamour, last cars, one-liners, youth rebellion, an overpaid psychiatrist and a squishiiy happy ending. It also has lines that would maire the most stalwart People's Friend reader squirm with embarrassment.
Katie is a speccy teenager with a brace on her teeth and no mommy. When her dad (Oanza) goes away on business, his girllriend (Catherine Hicks) takes her in hand and helps her realise her potential. This done, the devastatingly nubile Ms Doienz (greatly better-looking than her ex-Monlree lather) emerges lrom her cocoon to universal admiration lrom the local male teenlollr. Seldom has a hot lrnlie passed more rapidly through buhen
But lor daddy Oanza, the constant stream at suitors is less appealing. Two at his daughter’s chosen males particularly worry him. Underthe

increasingly warped guidance at his analyst (an engagineg obsessive Shawn), he mounts a bungling surveillance programme worthy oi Inspector Clouseau. Well, not quite, because although this movie has a certain amount of charm, there is no talent within a mile at Peter Sellers.
instead there's a mild examination ol the generation gap, at sexual ethics, and especially at the should-we-or- shouldn’t-we syndrome. In the linal analysis, Katie acts wisely, while her dad’s loolishness is shown up lor what it is — never more so than when his own sexuality iails under suspicion lrom his prospective in-iaws.
Despite the lairiy dire lirstlhlrty minutes, this is an enjoyable il predictable morality comedy which gains momentum as it rolls along. (Andrew Burnet)

mother’s terminal illness and his family’s general indifference to him by indulging in a high fantasy life. including the pretence that he is a dog. Terrible title.wonderful, unmissable film. Glasgow: GFT.
I Next ol Kill (15) (John Irvin. US. 1989) Patrick Swayze. Liam Neeson, Adam Baldwin. 109 mins. Familiar shoot-em-up fluff has Patrick Swayze as an Appalachian backwoods boy now plying his trade as a cop in Chicago, but who’s spurred on to revenge when his kid brother is murdered on the city streets by district crime king Adam Baldwin. Before long hick sibling Liam Neeson has hitched a ride to the big smoke to join in abloody hillbilly feud with the mob. Dog-eared plot and characterisations are only slightly offset by the always reliable lrishman Neeson‘s endearing stab at an American country bumpkin. Glasgow: Salon.
I Hine-And-A-Hall Weeirs (18) (Adrian Lyne. US. 1985) Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger. 113 mins. Divorcee Basinger becomes a slave to love and lust when she succumbs to the stubbly charms of commodities broker Rourke. Empty-headed and disturbing designer honking. Strathciyde: Odeon Ayr.
I Huns on the Run ( 12) (Jonathon Lynn. US, 1989) Eric ldle, Robbie Coltrane. Janet Suzman. 95 mins. There‘s a little more to this slapstick comedy than the title suggests. Idle and Coltrane, both in top form. two small time crooks who bungle their final heist up and soon find themselves taking refuge disguised as nuns in a convent. The unpredictable gags that follow easily surpass the high standards of
the above-average Carry-On film. It has proved immensely popular across the Atlantic too. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. L'Cl Craig Park. Strathciyde: Odeon Ayr. UCl Clydebank. UCl East Kilbride.
I The Philadelphia Story (PG) (George Cukor. US. 1940) Katharine Hepburn. Cary Grant, James Stewart. 112 mins. Splendidly sophisticated Hollywood comedy with Stewart as a scandalsheet reporter covering the society wedding of recently divorced Hepburn, ex-hubby Grant lurking in the wings. and romance recurdling despite itself. Sparkling dialogue and charismatic performances all round make this one ofthe best of its kind. Remade as the musical. High Society. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Pretty Woman ( 15) (Garry Marshall. US. 1990) Richard Gere. Julia Roberts, Ralph Bellamy. 12(lmins. In this hugely succesful comedy-romance. Gere stars as an unfeeiing financial wheeler-dealer discovering he is human after all when he spends a week in the company of Roberts' downhome goodtime girl. Conversely. she rediscovers her self-esteem by flawlessly carrying offthe role ofhis high society companion. so the audience can feel . happy for both of them. The outline might be as hackneyed as they come. but television veteran Marshall has just the right lightness of touch. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. ()deon. Edinburgh: Dominion. Odeon. UCI Craig Park. Strathciyde: Odeon Ayr. ()deon Hamilton. UCl Clyde-bank. L'Cl East Kilbridc.
