Blind Fury (18) (Philip Noyce, US, 1989) Butger Hauer, Terry D‘Duinn, Brandon Call. 87 mins. Rutger Hauer as a blind martial arts expert? That‘s right, a blind hero who knocks off dozens of villains with the same cane he uses to cross the road. Simply accept this ludicrous premise, and you're in for a lot of fun. Like many a family movie, it's billed as an ‘action-adventure-comedy’, but the reality is somewhat different, for Blind Fury is one of the sickest, most violent and, yes, entertaining films I‘ve suffered through in years.

Hauer plays Nick Parker, blinded in ’Nam on active service when his partner abandons him, but able to put this minor setback behind him when some extremely hospitable Vietnamese villagers nurse him back to health. Unable to heal his eyesight, they compromise by teaching him both enhanced powers of perception and impressive swordsmanship. Some years later however, he finds himself back in America and manages to track down his old army buddy's wife and son, but just as they‘re sitting down to

tea a ruthless gang of thugs bursts in, blows away mom and kidnaps the boy. Dur hero now finds himself on a mission to protect the youngster and reunite him with his dad.

Having whipped up considerable terror on the high seas in the recent Dead Calm, Aussie director Philip Noyce has proved he can handle tough, tense and intelligent action pictures. Blind Fury is certainly tough and tense, but it‘s about as intelligent as a lorry wombat, opting for high camp as the film‘s latter half degenerates into slick, offbeat slapstick. The only remotely credible aspect of the proceedings is the growing paternal relationship Butger develops with his young charge, but who cares? All pretence to seriousness is jettisoned during the climactic swordflghf, where the best choreography since Flynn and Bathbone is topped by a final flourish that‘ll have you laughing for hours. A curious mixture of romance in 16th century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant. often ludicrous. but enjoyably daffy adventure.
