I Scottish K1 Marathon Championships River Tay, Dunkeld—Perth. Noon. Twenty-three miles on your own, in a canoe, down the Tay is no mere paddle, particularly when the river is far from in spate. The low water-level provides a real danger of grounding while the weaker flow means more elbow grease than normal is required to complete the course.

CUP HANS?

It's their own fault, they were covering the wrong men, Maradona, Careca and Gullit. Nobody paid much attention to the 500-1 outsiders irom Cameroon and now, they have won through to the quarter-finals oi the World Cup with great style and only a little luck. Their hero solar has been septuagenarian Roger Milla, who makes Rex Findlay (ageing striker oi Fulchester lame) appear a youngster by comparison. At least you would think so, by the way the press locus on Milla’s age, 38, which is at least one iact that they can locus away irom tales oi voodoo in the dressing room.

Scotland again crashed out beiore

the knockout section even got under way, though this time they were desperater unlucky. The citizens oi Genoa having welcomed the tartan army with open arms, it not open bars, expressed incredulity that such a passionate nation could produce such a spiritless periormance against the Costa Ricans. Oi course, the rest is history and Brazil may now be regretting the late goal that earned them a tie with Argentina in Turin. The early exit oi the Brazilians irom the world stage is a iar more damaging

loss to the production than the ending

oi Scotland's walk-on part. They may not have been the team at old but they retained the ability to play attractive iootball, as they showed against Argentina, albeit without a powerful iinishing touch.

Meanwhile, West Germany continue to power their way through the iield overcoming Gullit and co, despite the unusual chants oi ‘Give us back our blcycles’ (commandeered during World War II), irom the Dutch tans. As the competition enters the quarter-iinal stage the two most likely iinalists, so iar, are West Germany and Italy— although the World Cup can be very unkind on those who stick their necks out. As for sportsmanship and lair play Jack Charlton probably came up with the best answer ior indiscipline when commenting on Rijkaard’s ejection oi phlegm into Voeller’s ear, during the Dutch German thriller in the San Siro— ‘li he’d have done that to me i’d have chinned him.“ (Our man in Milan).
