164th Annual Exhibition, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. It’s hard to know what to make at an exhibition like this. Over 400 diverse works (paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics, architectural models and so on) made by artists with olten diametrically opposed aims have been selected irom open submission and placed into the eight rooms ol the RSA with hardly enough breathing space to allow tor clear responses to any individual piece. The consensus oi opinion is that this year’s show is ‘better’ than other recent ones; but it's hard to point the linger at any particular groups at work, or artists, to demonstrate why this should be so.
Undoubtedly a major coup is in the
inclusion at six bronzes and tour drawings by William Turnbull, who was invited to take part. As you go up the stairs into the galleries his work greets you, iorms abstracted lrom the organic, each one simple, with angles and curves positioned so precisely that it's impossible to imagine how they could have been otherwise. His work has a contidence and a restraint that is not often seen elsewhere in the exhibition. Glen Onwin has two pieces which are probably the nearest in sensibility, though quite dillerent in look: black and white tile-like squares painted in encaustic. Jack Knox has one oi his rich and unromantic ladscapes— Burning the Heather— and a couple at seascapes, and Elizabeth Blackadder has a pleasing and delicate still-lite. 01 the artists who are less known, recent Edinburgh college graduate Su Trembath show a large mature and assured abstract canvas with the intriguing title Your Thoughts Be All Beaded On One String, Mrs. Other than this, there is plenty at
work in the established genres- cityscapes which could have been produced at any time overthe last century, ditto landscapes; portrait painting seems to be in crisis, and ligurative sculpture in a time-warp. Unlortunately a number ol good (Scottish) artists are all too conspicuous by their absence. (Hilary Robinson)

Daniel Reeves:The Well ol Patience 29 Jun. American artist Daniel Reeves won an Emmy for ‘Smothering Dreams‘. a short film based on his experiences in the Vietnam war. This latest project is a large. circular screen mounted on a carousel, which overwhelms the viewer with images gathered by Reeves during his travels through Asia. Africa. America. Europe and Scotland. The three 91min tapes explore the transience of both natural and man-made worlds

Willie Ooherty: Unknown Depths Photoworks 1980-1989 30 Jun—29 Jul. Derry artist Doherty uses large photographs superimposed with text to explore the feelings of fear, alienation and repression which have invaded the lives of people in his community. The central issue is that of marginalised culture being dominated by centralised power.
Living in the Gorbals 301 un—29 Jul. Asthe prospect of Gorbals refurbishment comes round for the seventh time this exhibition looks at the previous changes and at the greater part local people are now able to play in decision-making. The aim is to invite discussion and participation and on 21 Jul. from 10am—4pm. there will be a conference on the problems and possibilities of the rebuilding.
