MUSIC/FOLK
As well as the sessions in numerous pubs and clubs citywide, two venues to haunt during the 1990 Glasgow Folk Festival are the City Hall in Candieriggs, hosted each evening by a diiterent Scottish iolk club, and the palatial Winter Gardens in The People’s Palace, where you can enjoy the music oi Scotland, Ireland, Malta, Germany, Spain and Canada in a series oi dance concerts. These culminate on the final night in the international Folk Dance Festival, which brings together some oi the linest artists who have performed in Glasgow over the week. Events on oiier range from traditional music and dance staged throughout the city by the community programme to a late-night blues club and even an appearance by renowned veteran skiiile hero Lonnie Donegan.

on to periorrn in France later in the summer, the dozen or so musicians, singers and dancers in the Drumalbyn Folk Ensemble, are the authentic Scottish input to the Iniemational Folk Dance Festival. Drumalbyn present the traditional dancing oi rural Scotland, the styles uncorrupted by the ballet shoe and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. The group pays special attention to costume, using the original garments, and even having their brogues made by hand to the old

patterns.
Folk dance groups appear each lunchtime at the People’s Palace, and the Festival culminates on Sunday with a dance-in under the glass oi the Winter Gardens. One oi the most good-natured, and certainly the most colouriul oi the week's events, Colin MacAliister introduces groups and musicians irom Germany, Malta, Spain, England, Ireland and Scotland in a relaxed, iniormal atmosphere.
