THE LIE OF THE LAND

Compass Gallery, Glasgow. The work oi sisters Claire and Louise Scullion is succinct and articulate. The setting is Scottish countryside and the artist is a critic and strategist guiding us through a ‘picturesque’ landscape which is anything but benign. Arcadia is an ironic construct, the spectator becomes an explorer questioning our mirroring and use oi the world. ‘Landmarks’ by Claire Scullion is about points oi transition. The upper hall, a set at small canvases, depicts geese in flight tormation, one bird to each canvas. Below a long thin painting ieatures a semi-industrial coastline. This iragmentation oi the
I work establishes a duality between
geese and landscape so we question our place in the world. Who or what are the landmarks? The birds or our building irom the birds’-eye view? Situated on the perimeter oi the British landmass, state control lapses into a hotchpotch oi edges, marsh, buildings, a kind oi eitluent contrasting with the purpose and precision oi the birds llight. What habitat is this? The same double reading at landscape and image is achieved through cottage in drawings of Scottish hills. The geometry of the cut-out pine plantations becomes a giant calligraphy and unintentional land-art guided by inscrutable rules which question rationality and ‘re-root’ the countryside in a wider socio/political context.
In Louise Scullion's collages Scotland is a garden. Cut-up maps are rearranged and through the use of punning pictoriallsation where literary devices are used to radicalize the image, the garden, like the map, is a ‘machine to see with.’ Danger is re-introduced into our arcadian understanding ol the wilderness in ‘Experimentai Island' and ‘Amoeba island’ which engulfs another island inscribed with the words ‘obedient nature’. The reigning Order is one at permanent surveillance. However, photography and the handcralted ‘Small Evolution oi Chairs' would indicate a place lorthe individual not possible in the fashionable world oi simulacra. Both artists’ work is in danger oi becoming whimsical and additional tactics need to be considered. (Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
