Having choreographed all the pieces performed in Glasgow and still performing herself. Trish Brown and Co should not be missed. THE GEORGIAN STATE DANCE COMPANY
Seen in London. Appearing at the Playhouse, Edinburgh 18—19June. Most ol the publicity photographs of the Georgian State Dance Company would have you believe that it is a troupe of grinning, mustachloed, dagger-brandishing he-men with a talent for leaping to extraordinary heights, a penchant for jovial but dangerously last sword-play and a curious habit ol pirouetting around the stage on their knees. Indeed, most of the dances do revolve (literally) around sabres and swords and the men perlorm teats ot astonishing technical skill - from the walking and jumping on
the knuckles ol the toes, to the turns and leaps which rival the virtuosity ol the Cossacks. Yet amidst all this activity you cannot tail to notice the women ol the Company: authoritative and serene as they glide across the stage. Above all, Georgian dances are dazzling examples of spacing and geometry with their human chains which continually form and dissolve, marking out the perfect curves of enormous boundaries.
Wars and weddings provide the stock subject matter— but don’t let that keep you away from this lull-blooded orgy of fun. (Sophie Constantl)
