ROCK
Glasgow
I llorthside and Dirt Nation Strathclyde University Union, 90 John Street, 552 1895. £3. Signed to Factory and often lumped in with the next wave of Manchester bands after Happy Mondays and Stone Roses, Northside are looking potentially huge, especially among young men wearing casual clothing. We might not get to see them in venues of this size next year.
I Goodbye Mr Mackenzie Glasgow College Students Union, 70 Cowcaddens Road, 3320681. 9pm-7am. £6.50. A final fling for students and their guests. The Mackenzies, after triumphant slots supporting Deborah Harry and at The Big Day have just released a new single, ‘Blacker Than Black‘, reviewed elsewhere.
I Hearts and Minds King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272 St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. Glasgow band playing slick pop/rock that really gets the home crowd going. The band may announce a name change at this gig so as to avoid trouble from the American group of the same moniker. Way to body swerve those law suits, Davie! (Uhh, righton, sister!— bewildered Scottish Ed.)
I Kllh and Kin Pearce Institute, 84OGovan Road, 445 1941. Gaining strength in leaps and bounds, especially after their spot on— you guessed it — The Big Day, Kith and Kin, with their folkish slant on rock (or vice versa) could soon be one of the best known of this year's crop of Scottish bands.
I Boathouse Traders, Glassford Street, 552 5826. 9pm. Free. Live rock music in some capacity.
I The Big Money Minstrels, 66 Broomielaw, 204 3698.
I The Linden Tree Motherwell Town Hall. Catchy, melodic . . . ‘John Friendly’ wasa nice debut. When do we get another single?
I Live music PST Club, Studio, Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867.
I Zydeco Ceilidh Band Studio, Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867. Residency.
Edinburgh
I Tad and The Fluid Calton Studios, Calton Road, 556 7066. Doors open 7pm. One of American hardcore‘s pre-eminent bands, and that isn‘t just because of the sheer bulk of singer/guitarist Tad Doyle. Their album, unassumineg entitled God's Balls, and a follow-up EP produced by S‘e‘e Al‘i‘i are excellent primal noise. The Fluid are loud too, but a bit more run-of—the-mill. The extensive renovation of Calton Studios continues, and when it‘s finished ‘the only purpose-built music venue in Scotland‘ will have a post-industrial look similar to The Hacienda in Manchester . . . only more so. Surprisingly, the first event held in the new surroundings was a jazz ball, and a new dance club, Fuse, with Yogi on the turntables, will be starting soon.
I Skeleton Crew Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.
I The Bootsles Duo Globe, West Port, 229 4553. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Alsoin The Rootsie Tootsie Blues Band,Jim Condie on guitar and Ron Tate on vocals and harmonica play blues, gospel and a hint of jazz.
I Les Filipinos BB‘s Basement Bar, Barony Street (off Broughton Street), 556 8240. 5—7pm, 8—11pm. Free Residency. Straight from the Philippines, and blending the tagalog of their homeland with a variety of styles six nights a week.
I 7/11 Black‘s Bar, Portobello High
RIDAY 15 ~
Street, 669 5504. 8.30-11.30pm. Residency. Rock and blues.
SATURDAY 16
Glasgow
I The Lilac Time Strathclyde University Union, 90.lohn Street, 552 1895. 10pm. Free. Stephen ex-Tin Tin Duffy‘s band are playing a free gig after the Union‘s big-screen showing of the Scotland v Sweden match. Students and guests only. I Tad and The Fluid Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens, 339 9784. £4.50. See Fri 15. Scotland v Sweden in the bar from 8pm.
I Loose Cut Halt Bar, 160 Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9pm. Free. R&B.
I Phllanders Tricycle Traders, Glassford Street, 552 5826. 9pm. Free.
I Alsimevu The Shelter, 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. 9.30pm. £2.50. African jazz.
I The Big Easy Minstrels, 66 Broomielaw, 204 3698. The band not the film, Ellen Barkin fans.
I Bard Studio, Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867. 3—7pm. Popular weekly jazz session. I Northside Craigburn Pavilion. Gourock. See Fri 15. Showing Scotland v Sweden on TV from 8pm. See Fri 15.
Edinburgh
I The Matter Babies, Bulkhead and Moon Craigmillar Arts Centre. Newcraighall Road. 8pm. £2 (£1 .50). All eyes are on The Matter Babies, who release their lean and hungry LP Skinnydipping on Nightshift this month.
I Burlt'n'iiair Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. Hard rock.
I The Thanes and The Ground Basin Street, Haymarket Terrace, 337 1006. The venerable Thanes celebrate the imminent release of their eight-track 10in Better Look Behind You, which holds no surprises, but surprises aren’t why anyone listens to The Thanes anyway, are they? Lovingly recreated sounds of the days when Brian Jones was God. on aseleetion of instruments that would make a 60s archivist drool.
I The Shadowland Globe, West Port, 229 4553. 9.30pm. Free. A definite 60s quality to the songwriting, but pumped with electrical energy. An ‘aggrcssive, powerful on-stage presentation‘ too. Golly.
I The Last Minute, Long Thin Kylie and Jaila Krishna Moray House, Holyrood Road. 556 8455. 9pm. £3 (£2). We‘re keen tosee Jaffa Krishna, the ‘post-acid‘ duo who are apparently a weird experience indeed. The Last Minute were winners in the 1989 List/McEwans Lager demo competition and are one of the few groups around these days who have a prominent harmonica.
I The Kitchen Devils Preservation Hall. Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.
I Hometown Negociants, Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free.
I Las Fllipinas BB's Basement Bar. Barony Street (off Broughton Street), 556 8240.5-7pm,8—11pm. Free. Residency. See Fri 15.
I Texas Breakfast] .D. Walker‘s. South Clerk Street, 662 4731. Blues, playing alternate Saturdays.
I Live music Globe, West Port. 229 4553. 9.30pm. Free.
SUNDAY 17 Glasgow
I The Soul Brothers Barrowland, 244 Gallowgate, 552 4601. One ofthe biggest bands in Zimbabwe, but little-known over here, so it may have been a serious misjudgement on their management‘s part to book them into a venue this size. All the more reason to go along and make them feel welcome. So do it.
I Jesse Baron and the Desperadoes and Three Videodrome, 33—39 York Street, 221 0441. £2. Songs from the excellent new LP, Nixon. Andrew Tully is probably one
