Adrian Wiszniewski The Compass Contribution — 21 Years of Contemporary Art 1969—1990, Tramway, Glasgow. The Tramway once again shows itself to be a unique resource; its versatility is magnificently revealed in the startling contrast between the previous David Mach installation and the current painting exhibition. Nicki White and her team are to be congratulated on the heroic effort involved in transforming the space virtually overnight. It will be a great loss if the venue shuts after 1990, as its scale and scope generate a climate of confidence and experiment which should justify its running costs. While not denying the place and importance of the Compass Gallery, gentility and good taste are the hallmarks of this 21-year retrospective. Here, Scottish art’s imperviousness to the changing cultural and economic world around it is almostcomplete. The 50s are
rim.
represented by the odd excursion in sculpture, the 60s by minimalism, with more up-to-date contributions from Steven Campbell, Adrian Wiszniewski, and Margaret Mellis, among others.
Picture-making, which predominates, is not antithetical to a critical approach or attitude. Because the business of painterly etiquette (craftsmanship) and a pretty painting take precedence, cliches predominate, as in Douglas Thomson’s and James Cosgrove’s work.
No one here has the courage to take risks, to get in a mess with paint, as do Philip Guston or Baselitz, for example. Despite much genuine talent, this is a world where people imitate themselves early on. The painting department at Glasgow School of Art has a lot to answer for. There are some fine paintings on show, however, and there is much to be enjoyed by the public at large. (Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
