Souped-up rally cars speeding through lorests and belching exhaust lumes into the clear mountain air probably ranlt tairly low on any list oi environmentally-sound sporting events. However, the lorthcoming CHI Scottish Rally (9-11 June) hopes to at least ‘do its bit' towards green-mania by promoting the use at lead-tree petrol in participating cars. The best pertormance lrom a car using lead-tree petrol will win a Ticklord Green Award (gasp). They hope, according to John Thurston ol Ticlttord, to destroy the ‘popular misconception that unleaded petrol and green cars must have reduced pertormances.’
Setting oil lrom Blythswood Square, Glasgow, at 10am, the cars cover a gruelling 900 miles along Forestry Commission traclts. Alter Saturday's stage which linishes at midnight, there are two more stages to be covered, Sunday loam—5.30pm and Monday 2.30am—12.30pm, betore they return bleary-eyed to Glasgow.
Britain's top-seeded driver Malcolm Wilson, in his Ford Sierra Cosworth, will have the advantage ol leading the tield lrom the beginning — giving him the benelit at taking on the course without having to contend with the dust created by other cars, which could well be a problem this year. The top Scottish driver Iastyearwas Colin MacRae, son oiJimmy, who is also competing. David Llewellin, last year’s winner, will also be a strong contender.
Around 250,000 spectators are expected to turn out lor the privilege of seeing some at Europe’s top rally drivers speed past them in the Scottish leg oi the European and Open Rally Championship — something that may strike the layman as an exercise akin to high-speed train-spotting, but will they be able to spot the ones using lead-tree petrol?
