The Scottish International Children‘s Festival in lnverleith Park is the lirst of what will become an annual event to present prolessional periormers specialising in shows which are both educational and entertaining. The majority oi the events take place during school hours and the organisers report a healthy booking response from schools. Most events however also run during the week-end, so everyone will have a chance to sample the programme which boasts a large overseas contingent as well as several Scottish companies. The youngest age range is catered lor by Small Change Theatre irom Canada. At the Beach (suitable lor 4-10 years) is presented in the form oi a large ‘pop-up' book. The Edinburgh Puppet Company and the Edinburgh Quartet combine their talents under the name of Imagination Unlimited with The Music Crystal, a show designed to introduce children (7—12 yrs) to music and instruments. drug abuse. American company Creative Arts Team (see Theatre preview page) re-tell a real-life story of a young talented basketball player who dies as a result at experimenting with drugs. Open Your Eyes and Dance promises to be a lively performance with Svinurai, young musicians lrom Zimbabwe, introducing the audience (5 years and over) to their music, instruments and basic dance steps.
Ongoing dailythroughout the Festival are a variety ol tree workshops, storytelling sessions, banner-making, lace-painting, nature trails and open-air shows (see listings) at the Festival site and in the neighbouring Royal Botanic Gardens. Parents with very young children can take advantage oi the creche lacillties and mothers' room open lrom 9.30am—4.45pm daily. Putting a royal seal or approval onto what promises to be an action-packed six days, will be HRH The Princess Margaret at a Gala pertormance on the opening night. (Rene Taylor)
