The latest in a wide-ranging series of exhibitions at Glasgow School of Art, Exchanging Influences features the work of four ex-GSA students who, after leaving, promptly went abroad. Three obtained British Council scholarships— Lorraine Cotterell to Yugoslavia for a year, Fiona Robertson to Poland for a year and Lorraine Turley to Hungary for two years. The fourth, Shona Barr, had a year’s scholarship to Norway.
The temptation of course is to read into this work some influence of the country visited. Barr's expressionist, abstracted landscapes with their earthy mixings of colour fit well with our impressions of the land of fjords, Ibsen, Munch and Grieg; likewise Robertson’s figurative expressionism does notjar when placed in a Polish context the impression given is that

some of these artists visited countries whose culture might complement their work.
The others immersed themselves more obviously in their chosen environment. Turley is concerned with the position of women in Hungary, and
, in Hungarian folk-culture. Scrawled,
barely discernible messages about ritual and rights help create contemporary readings of classic symbols-the tower, the angel, etc.
Cotterell’s work is more indebted to the
fresco imagery of Yugoslavia and also the icons of Russia (she has also spent time in Moscow) which she subtly subverts or alters. The large oil pastel drawing, Ring a Ring a Roses, is
particularly powerful. Poking wry fun at
authority, it shows a large halo-less saint holding a pig with a halo. Small figures dance gleefully around the figure‘s knees. (Hilary Robinson)
After the favourable reactions to his etchings of Scottish landscapes. he was finally persuaded to give up his drapery business in Edinburgh and take up drawing full-time.
