UP THE WORKER
The Common Thread, Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow.
Openly acknowledging their debt to Fernand Leger, Jane Carroll and Alistair McCallum have produced six joyous and expertly designed banners as part 01 the STUC's contribution to Glasgow 1990. While not attempting a discourse on power relationships, the work nonetheless raises some significant questions through its choice oI imagery and composition.
Throughout, the use ol insets and the general absence oi verticals and horizontals, create an inlormal and accessible Ieel which contrasts sharply with the rigid hierachy and bureaucratic decision-making process 01 our committee-bound trade unions. At the same time images at women operatives predominate. ‘Working Women’ contains depictions 01 a washing line, glimpses ol red and white kitchen linoleum, a baby, a cleaner vacuuming, alongside women operatives. Only the threat of a declining membership has induced trade unions to recruit part-time workers, the only ieasible employment lor many women. The locus on women also brings to mind the lack oi Iemale trade union otiicers and the ditliculty they have in gaining ottice.
The spontaneity oi the banners rellects how women Iabourers’ strikes have taken place historically, a topic researched by Eleanor Gordon. Donated to Glasgow the banners should be in the People’s Palace or another appropriate place. At present they are obscured by two ghastly giant horses. Can’t they be rehung, in lull view, down either side ol Kelvingrove’s hall? (Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
