Helen Flockhart, Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh.
An essentialist approach to femininity informs Helen Flockhart's attempt to reclaim women’s experience under patriarchal Christianity (and Catholicism in particular), where artist and woman/mother are mutually exclusive roles. The tactic throughout the exhibition is inversion; the insistant corporeality of the artist’s self-portraits reverses the Church’s dichotomy of mind over matter. This triggers empathy in the female viewerwho will recognise her own lemaleness in the work.
Influenced stylistically by naive painting, single squat female figures are depicted against a flat background. The women are minutely detailed, revealing facial hair and mottled skin. As in Catholic retablo painting, the figure holds a story-telling symbol in each hand. However, in situating the protagonist in an extra-social and mystical space through the use of halos, Flockhart relegates woman to a space on the periphery of social experience which makes it impossible to assess critically the problem of stereotyping, women‘s history in art, or the identity of the artist. In Maire and Untitled 1989 a white Iluid spurts from a wound in the palm of the protagonists hand; in Sell-Portrait a vein runs from an arm into a jar containing a baby. In each work the
- other hand holds a stick. Somehow the
notion of a female essence needs to be opened up, possibly through the use of psychoanalytic theory, since all the references are idyllic or extra-social. Howeverthis in itself cannot constitute an authentic female voice, and the legacy of female martyrdom is one of bondage, and the ‘artist dolorosa’ is close to the concept of artist as genius. This is an engrossing, touching and thoughtful exhibition. (Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
