How to take a portrait, Scottish
National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. How do you take a portrait photograph? Make it look as much like a painting as possible — or at least, that is the message lrom this exhibition. The images themselves (mainly from the late 19th century and the late 20th century) are lascinating as a group; it is their contextuallsing that is problematic. The early images show how photographers such as David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson were keen to experiment with aping the p0pular painting techniques and genres oi the day- and it's interesting to see, particularly in the two portraits 01 Hill himselt (1843/6 and 1860) how interest in technical developments hindered this. Each photo has an accompanying panel, intorming the viewer at some 01 the history 01 the image, which is useiul, and also proposing a reading 01 the image. Even in the later photos, the readings suggested are usually in the tradition at painting, and they get tied into knots trying to decide how much at the 'real

person' can be known through the photo-as it photography was some lorm ol phrenology. There is also a bizarre comment on Owen Logan's three portraits of Moroccans, to the eltect that these are portraits because the subject has given permission tor the photo to be taken. But this is true of every photo in the show; the effect then is to imply that photos 01 Moroccans cannot normally be dignified as ‘Portraits’.
Having said this, it is an enjoyable show. It's a treat to see the original print of the lamous photo by Frederick Henry Evans 01 Aubrey Beardsley (1893) and the two of Glasgow artist Jessie M King (1905 and 1920). Jessie Ann Matthew has produced a double portrait oi lather and son judges, the Lords Cameron, designed to make people want to keep as lar lrom them as possible. Three of the ever-seductive portraits by the excellent Robin Gillanders round the show up - ol Tam White, Aly Bain and Michael Clark. (Hilary Robinson)
