Glasgow
I Helen Shapiro SECC. Finnieston Quay. Tickets from Victory Christian Centre, 440 0509. It‘s been a long while since Shapiro's husky voice took ‘You Don‘t Know‘ and ‘Walking Back to Happiness‘ to the top of the charts - nearly 30 years- and yet she doesn‘t seem to have benefitted overmuch from nostalgia booms. How many will still remember her?
I Fini Tribe King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut.272 St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Sec Mayfest section.
I Thee Hypnotics and Dream Grinder Glasgow College Student Union. 70 Cowcaddens Road. 3320681. 9pm. £4. Grungey psychedelians compared (though not necessarily always favourably) with bands like Loop and Spacemen 3. but now those two are fighting over the same territory there‘s plenty space for them.
I Big Miss Behave Halt Bar. 160 Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9pm. Free. Glasgow trio playing rather basic and naive pop and currently attracting record company interest. though who knows why.
I The It Thang The Vic. Glasgow Schoolof Art. 167 Renfrew Street. 3320691. 9.30pm. Tired of the insipid Glasgow white soul sound'.’ Check out the debut gig from this funk-based band whose
influences range Sly and the Family Stone. Prince, and Chaka Khan to Jimi Hendrix. Recommended.
I New York Underground Night Clyde Cavern, Clyde Place, 429 3785. With Hugh Reed and The Velvet Underpants as Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. Pas the Gas as The Stooges and Instant Fish as The Ramones. A night out for all the family.

I Live music PST Club. Studio. Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867. 10pm. £1.
Edinburgh
I Ride Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Chart band, already? Strange as it seems. the music papers picked up on them only a few months ago as one of the indie bands to watch. and now their Creation single ‘Play' is heading chartwards. This will be a busy one.
I The Mourning After and Dead Flowers Basin Street, Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. 8pm—midnight. They‘ve been compared to The Fuzztones. have Sheffield‘s Mourning After, but Dead Flowers from Newcastle are more in the Hendrix/Mudhoney mould.
I Barky Barty and The Twist Potterrow Student Union. Students and guests only. The Barkys, leading lights in the Cumbernauld scene. have a single away being pressed at the moment, and 84C are apparently filming them for inclusion in a new series. Interested?
I The Wlieel (TBC) Moray House Student Union, Holyrood Road, 5568455. 9.30pm. See Fri 4.
I The Great Junction Street Band Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 226 3816. See Fri4.
I Blueflnger Trading Post, The Shore. 553 5153. 9.30pm. Free. Rock‘n‘roll-influenced band with plenty session experience and a lot of gigs around town. They have recorded alive album, which should see the light of day soon.

SATURDAY 12 Glasgow
I hide Mayfair, 490 Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. £4 in advance and get ‘em early because this will be a sell-out. Note early starting time. Doors: 7pm and band on stage at 8.30pm. This is because current indie hotshots Ride share a similar audience with The Family Cat who are playing later the same night at Glasgow College.

I Dig Strauss Old Athaeneum Theatre. 169 Buchanan Street. 10.30pm. £2. Tickets from Ticket Link (227 551 l ) and Virgin Records. Winners of The List/McEwan‘s 1989 demo competition, Big Strauss wowed them at the last Towerbeat a few weeks back. The building they‘re playing in. coincidentally,
houses our office . and currently looks like a bomb site. The builders promise it‘ll be ready in time.
I Spamborsltee Traders. Glassford Street. 552 5826. A rather wild collective from these parts. growing in popularity after a few well-received gigs. Expect the unexpected.
I Bard Studio. Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 3pm. Free. See Sat 5.
I Zenith Studio, Shuttle Street. Paisley. 8896867. 10pm. Free. Heavy rock.
Edinburgh
I (hear Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Frozen in the Antarctic for millennia. Gwar were thrust rudely into the modern world when their manager-to-be. Sleazy P Martini, crashed his plane into the ice and thawed them out. They have carried on their tribal brawling and obscure rituals undeterrcd by the limitations ofthe rock‘n‘roll circuit. Surely one of the most over-the-top outfits in the world. their science fiction savagery is quickly becoming legend. How the Venue is going to contain nineteen of them. plus assorted props and instruments. is beyond us. Turn to Shortlist at the front for visual confirmation of their bizarrencss.
I John Otway Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. Welcome return for one ofthe Great British Eccentrics of rock. in a tour which ties in with the release ofhis book, called. naturally enough. Cor, Baby, That's Really Me, and a greatest hits of the same title. Expect some healthy looning around, as befits a man who once signed himself to Warner Bros by slapping their logo on to his single. has apparently never managed to repay a record company advance in his life and could only turn a profit by touring on the back of a motorbike with a tent.
I The Spooks Bikini Club. Moray House Student Union, Holyrood Road. 5568455. 10pm—3am. £2. See Fri 4.
