Just published in Canongate’s estimable ‘Kelpie' series are Julie by Cora Taylor (£2.25); Mary-Ellen L. Collura’s Winners (£2.25); Masteroi Morgana by Allan Campbell McLean (£2.50) and Donald Lightwood's The Baillie's Daughter (£2.50).
Julie and Winners are both set in Canada; winners of Canadian book awards, each has an ‘outsider' as its central character. Julie (suitable for age 9 plus) is a haunting, sensitive story of a ‘seventh child oi a seventh child’ who has special powers which isolate her from her family. Though guarded and fearful of this gift nevertheless she has to use and trust her powers when her father is involved in an accident and only she can save him.
KELPIE QUARTET
Winners describes a young blacktoot Indian boy's coming to terms with life on a reservation with a long-lost grandfather, after eight years oi
fostering by white folks. Young Jordy feels unwanted and useless when he is given a prairie horse and finds new hope and a will to win as he breaks it in for a big race. (Forage 11 plus).
Like the author's better known novel The Hill of the Red Fox, Masteroi Morgana is set in and around Skye. Niall’s brother suffers a near-fatal fall; in an attempt to discover the truth about the ‘accident', he takes his brother’s place on the fishing boat and reveals a twilight world of deception.
‘Ouest fora Kelpie Award l990' winner, The Baillie's Daughter has 19th century backdrop, bringing togethertwo travellers in an unlikely combination; Cope, a young free-thinking English prize fighter, and Janet, a God-fearing14-year-old girl looking for work in St Andrews after the death of her mother. Their first meeting with Baillie Douglas does not auger well but little do they realise the secrets and hypocrisy they will uncover and the affect the Baillie will have on their lives (for age 12 plus). (Susan Barnes)
