works from the relative safety ofTaiwan. His touching portrayal of the island‘s post war history won the 1989 Golden Lion in Venice and broadly depicts the lives of four brothers battling to retain their integrity as organised crime moves from the Chinese mainland to influence the local community. I Commissar ( PG) (Aleksandr Askoldov. USSR. 1967) Nonna Murdyukova. ll(l mins.Asko1dov‘s humanist masterpiece that revives the poetic eloquence ofcarlicr Soviet masters like Dovzhenko and Eisenstein. The story concerns a Red Army officer experiencing the suffering and the bravery ofa Jewish community during the Civil War of the 1920s. Sensitive subject matter that caused the film to be shelved by the authorities for over twenty years. leaving its director unable to find work. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre.
I The Cook, The Thief. His Wile and Her Lover ( 18) (Peter Greenaway. UK. 1989) Richard Bohringer. Michael Gambon. Helen Mirren. Alan Howard. Tim Roth. 1le mins. Greenaway has made a film guaranteed to offend everybody. Though beautifully art-directed. photographed. produced and acted. it deals with the kind of subject matter normally only found under the counter at video nasty stores. Compulsive and unforgettable but you'd be hard pressed to like the thing. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Courage Mountain (ti) (Christopher Leitch. L'S. 1990) Charlie Sheen. Leslie Caron. 98mins. In this revision ofthe Heidi saga. Juliette Caton plays the young damsel in distress as her life with grandad is threatened by both an impending war and the bureaucratic talons oforphanage director Yorgo Voyagis. Sheen plays Peter.the dashing soldier hero struggling to maintain his dignity in the face ofsome truly cringeworthy dialogue. Adequate matinee material for the unfussy kids' audience. but parents with a sense ofthe absurd might get into it. (ilasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street.
I Cries and Whispers ( 18) Ingmar Bergman. Sweeden. 1972) Harriet Anderson. lngrid Thulin. Liv l'llmann. 91 mins. At the turn ofthe century. a middle-aged spinster lies dying ofcancer. Her two sisters. one frigid. one suicidal. come to watch over her. Mounted in the style of Edvard Munch. (ilasgow: (ii’l‘.
I Dangerous Liaisons ( 15) (Stephen Frears. LS. 1988) (ilenn Close. John Malkovich. Michelle l’feiffer. Keanu Reeves. 121) mins. Madame de’l'ourvel and the V'icomte de Valmont (Close and Malkovich ) are treacherous 18th century aristocrats weaving a web oferotic duplicity around one another. Frears makes a notable Hollywood debut. guiding his cast through a difficult set of narrative pirouettes. Yet for all the pent-up emotion on screen. little fervour seeps through. and the result is rather cold and calculating. Strathclyde: L'Cl East Kilbride.
I Drowning By Numbers ( 18) (Peter (ireenaway. UK. 1988) Joan Plowright. Bernard Hill. Joer Richardson. 118mins. In a narrative as straightforward and complicated as the title. three generations of women. all of them called Cissie
Colpitts. dispose of their husbands in a? series of aquatic murders. whilst the numbers 1 to 11X) run through the filmin the backgrounds. Full ofGreenaway‘s ravishing visual symmetries and with a highly developed sense ofthe incongruous. the movie sports a number of polished. sympathetic performances. Besides the enjoyable pastime of number spotting. this is among his most accessible and pleasurable films. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Earth Girls Are Easy ( PG) (Julien Temple. US. 1988) Geena Davis. Jeff Goldblum. Michael McKean. Charles Rocket. 1(leins. A smallspaceship crash-lands in a Californian manicurist‘s swimming pool. ()ut step three furry aliens to enjoy the plastic delights ofbeach culture and. once they shave off their fur. the attentions of the native girls. Emphatically. but quite creatively. tasteless musical comedy which. on the whole. does a good job of lampooningthe social whirl in which consumption is king and jargon the language of fools. For sure. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre.
I Exorcist 2: The Heretic ( 18) (John Boorman. US. 1977) Richard Burton. Louise Fletcher. Linda Blair. 1 1()mins. The horror film that once turned heads receives an unworthy sequel in this silly mumbo-jumbo about priest Burton trying to understand the demons still lurking within the hapless Ms Blair. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr.
I The Fabulous Baker Boys ( l5) (Steve Klovcs. US. 1989) Jeff Bridges. Beau Bridges. Michelle Pfeiffer. 113 mins. Writer/director Kloves makes an auspicious debut with this evocative tale of broken dreams. fraternal jealousy and slowly awakening passion among three very ordinary cabaret performers. Veteran piano duo Jeff and Beau draft in Ms Pfciffer's smokey chanteuse to save their act‘s declining fortunes. but as the trio go on the road together. romantic and professional relationships are soon in turmoil. Crackling with some ofthe sharpest dialogue in years. this is a moody. mature picture. beautifully shot and scored. that has to come highly recommended. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon.
I Gardens 01 Stone ( 15) (Francis Coppola. US. 1987) James Caan. Angelicalluston. DB. Sweeney. 111 mins. The (iardcnsof Stone are the headstones in the military cemetary at Arlington. Coppola‘s choice of location to make his second Vietnam movie. I Guys and Dolls ( L') (Joseph L. Mankiewicz. US. 1955) Marlon Brando. Jean Simmons. Frank Sinatra. Vivian Blaine. Stubby Kaye. 150 mins. The unusual mixture of the mumbling (Brando) and the musical (Sinatra and Blaine) conspires to generate a rare depth of feeling in this powerful and inventive musical. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
