I They Might Be Giants: Flood (Elelttra) Just looking at the lyric sheet and wondering what these wadgcs of wacky surrealism could sound like is enough to make the head spin. Fortunately. Floodis an endearing pot-pourri of mainly-acoustic tracks. usually with a trombone or accordion. and in one case a cracking whip. to jolly things along. Pure joy wins out in ‘Birdhouse in Your Soul'. the happiest song in aeons; the aural equivalent. in fact. of the lightbulb appearing over a cartoon head. The Giants‘ sense of humour might get them invited to share a few beers with Colorblind James. but at the end of the night they‘d go their separate ways. The Giants could never be so deadpan. and James couldn‘t stand the tireless pace at which the Giants come up with such cunning melodies. Nineteen tracks in and they're still smiling. ‘Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads.‘ No thanks. id rather have the new They Might Be Giants LP on my turntable for the rest of the year. (Alastair Mabbott)
IJello Biatra. Beatnigs. Keith Leelanc. etc: Terminal City Ricochet (Alternative Tentacles) Cynics who thought they'd seen the last ofJello Biafra with the demise of the Dead Kennedys have been forced to think again. His wicked spoken word album No More Cocoorts. the FrankenchrLst court case and his opposition to the anti-choice lobby showed that he was a long way from sinking into graceless retirement as. say. an MTV video jockey. Terminal ('in Ricochet is the soundtrack fora film already in production. judging from the sleeve. though whether we‘ll get to see the end result is another matter. The music is about fifty-fifty. some with Biafra on vocals. some without. and there are a few stinkers. as you'd expect. However. ifyou thought straightahead American rock hadn‘t an ounce of spunk left. try Art Bergmann‘s ‘War Party‘. (Alastair Mabbott)

ROCK
RIDAY 23 Glasgow
I Gary Clail's On-U Sound System Glasgow College. 70 Cowcaddens Road. 332 0681. Students and guests only. A wizard DJ. Expect to hear House. reggae. hip-hop. heavy metal — all with one thingin common: solid power dance grooves.
I Midnight Blue Venue. 490 Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. With a lot of friends in these parts — Dougie White and Alec Dickson were in La Paz and Heavy Pettin‘ respectively — this could be a fairly well-attended night.
I The Hicks The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. Achieved a lot in the short time they‘ve been going. Melodic rock. typical of so many Glasgow bands. but with subtle charm. The real energy and excitement of The Hicks is best captured live.

I Curiosity Killed The Cat and Worldwide Strathclyde University Union. 90John Street. 552 1895. £4. Strange choice of venue you may think. is it adesperate attempt to gain credibility. or a shrewd move realising the kitsch potential ofa teeny-bOp band? Either way the ‘wacky‘ students will have a whale of a time pretending they‘ve been fans all along.

Vidcodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. Replacing Farewell Parade on this bill. The Outriders are being whispered about as being the next big group from Glasgow. Their big American sound hints strongly that they think so too. Best Before Winter have a more restrained. but catchy. pop sound.
