Cuddly Kylie plays Lola Lovell. the girl who breaks the conventions of small town 1957 Australian life by running off with her boyfriend (Schlatter). Beset by a high cliche quotient. it is hardly the shocker it has been painted. Strathclyde: Kelburne.

Out step three furry aliens to enjoy the plastic delights ofbeach culture and. once they shave off their fur. the attentions of the native girls. Emphatically. but quite creatively. tasteless musical comedy which, on the whole. does a good job of lampooning the social whirl in which consumption is king and jargon the language of fools. Artlcss. archetypal road movie in which two dope-loving bikers travel the highways and by-ways of America. Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s novella. this near-Greek tragedy with its fairytale qualities follows the adventures of innocent teenager Erendira. turned into a whore by her wicked grandmother for accidentally burning down their hacienda. Featuring deliberately over-emphatic performances. the film‘s overload of symbolic imagery makes its visual eccentricity quite memorable. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I ET (Steven Spielberg. US. 1982). Dec Wallace, Henry Thomas. Peter Coyote. 115 mins. An alien creature gets stranded on earth (the opening sequence of threatening legs and flashing torches is beautifully done). where he is adopted by some kids. who help him construct a communication device to summon back his spaceship. All the little guy wanted to do was go home. but Spielberg made sure he had lots of cute and agreeable adventures first. and slipped in the most tear- jerking psuedo-death since Baloo the Bear in The Jungle Book for good measure. I Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask ( 18) (Woody Allen. US. 1972) Woody Allen. Lynn Redgrave. Burt Rynolds. Gene Wilder. 87 mins. Ragbag ofsmutty sketches sending up the pomposity ofthe sex manual. Lots of lowlights include Gene Wilder finding sensual satisfaction with a sheep. but the concluding section set inside a penis during intercourse with Allen as a reluctant sperm is a bit ofa hoot. This was before Mr Allen became a serious American film director. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

Five unsuspecting youngsters head off for a healthy weekend in a mountain cabin. only to fall foulof wicked demons whose purpose is - wait for it — wholesale slaughter. Every horror cliche is exploited and subverted in this stylish . cheapo schlocker-shocker made with imagination by an inventive young team. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Bruce ‘fastest axe in the West’ Campbell and another selection of hardy citizens gird their loins and set their Chainsaws running for another ding-dong battle with the evil forces in the woods. Less gruellingly relentless than the original. this was the smart trash hip hit ofthe year. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Family Business ( 15) (Sidney Lumet. US. 1989) Sean Connery. Dustin Hoffman. Matthew Broderick. Rosana de Soto. 110 mins. From the titles down this is Connery‘s film. As old Granpa McMullen. he swears. drinks. womanises and hangs his arms out of police cells a lot. It is a role he looks good in. Hoffman. has a harder time playing the crime-spurning son though Broderick. as the grandson. stands up well to his elders and betters. Together they get involved in a foolproof heist dreampt up by the grandson. Once old Sean gets banged up however, the film loses its way and slides into a mire of sentimentality.
