All Dogs Go to Heaven (U) is (Don Blulh, US, 1989) With the voices of Burt Reynolds, Loni Anderson, Dom Deluise. 84 mins. Alterseeing this film I was disapointed that I couldn’t write a scathing review of yet another crass, sickeningly sentimental message movie for kids. Yes, All Dogs Goes to Heaven is all of those things, but i have humbly to admit I enjoyed it.
As the title suggests, it’s anthropomorphic canine adventure time. Charlie Barkin, a German Shepherd (as voiced by Burt Reynolds) breaks out lrom the slammer (the New Orleans dog pound) with his buddy, Itchy. The pair have had a shady past. They’ve done sometime, but now they want back into their old business with gambling mobster Carlace, the typically bloated, cigar-chomping villain oi the piece. A few double-crosses later and the heavy has dispatched our hero Charlie to A Better Place, but a complication with ol' Father Time means that he ends up back on earth, with a whole new set of problems to face.

irom sources as various as Back To The Future, Peter Pan, and (oddly enough) Paper Moon, when Charlie linds himself abetted by an orphan girl with a gilt ior gambling, and the background animation tends to sloppines, it's Bluth’s sense ol humourthat saves the picture. Crammed with references to other movies, and sporting delirious set-pieces like the irenzied betting on a real-liie rat-race, All Dogs Go To Heaven may not quite recapture Disney’s late Thirties Golden Age, or even compare with Roger Rabbit’s more recent technical wizardry, butl guliawed away like the big kid I am. Brats everywhere should absolutely love it. it they don’t, shoot 'em. There’s no rational alternative when it comes to cartoons. (Dylan Matthew)
