HARD CORE CONFAB
Edinburgh Women Against Pornography is holding a one-day conlerence on pornography. The conference is to be held at Drummond High School, Edinburgh on Saturday 24. Following a week at events in November last year, which culminated in the ‘Reclaim The Night’ march along the streets at Edinburgh, the group is continuing its campaign to increase awareness at the ettects ot pornography.
The aim at the conlerence is generally to widen women’s understanding (since it is a women-only event) at the implications of pornography both politically and, at the same time, its personal signiticance on women's lives. As the group explains: ‘We have been brainwashed into not seeing and not talking about pornography. . . The first thing we can do then is to conlront the problem and to talk to other women about it. We can gain strength lrom sharing those feelings with other women and then chanelling the anger into direct action against the pornographers.’ The conterence provides just such an opportunity for discussion on this (often taboo) subject
and is also a rallying-point to women to organise.
Numerous workshops have been organised throughout the day at the conlerence, on such diversely related subjects as: Pornography in the Workplace, Child Pornography, Pornography and Racism, Pornography in the Home, Legal Strategies and Local Government and Winning the Arguments About Pornography. All aspects ol the issue are being considered during the day's events, but, obviously, the emphasis is on a positive (and active) campaign strategy.
The main speakers will be Liz Kelly, member of the Trouble and Strife Collective lrom London and Evelyn Gillan, lrom the Violence Against Women Working Group. There will also be speakers reporting on the campaign in England to date.
Creche lacilities will be available as well as a bookstall. The entry lee also includes a vegetarian lunch. The organisers are also holding a women~only disco in the evening at the Wee Red Bar at Edinburgh’s Art Couege.
The conlerence is open to all women - but you're advised to book early to save disappointment! (Ann Vinnicombe)
