Dinosaurs Alive! Until 3 June. Using compressed air and computers an American firm have reversed the effects of the Ice Age and brought some dinosaurs back to life. Seven adult and three baby dinosaurs will be snapping. roaring and swishing their tails in the gallery.

DISCRETE GESTURES
Michael Upton, Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh.
The chances are that whenever you go to the Demarco gallery there will be four or five exhibitions spread over the three floors. One of the exhibitions will probably be execrable, one will be ‘studenty’, and the one in the beautiful top space will not have come to terms with the architecture at all. However, one of the shows may well be a gem. Increasingly it seems that the best exhibitions here (such as Derek Jarman, Rose Frain, and now Michael Upton) tend to be of small-scale, big-thinking works, which are not scaled-down versions of large paintings, but manage to say more in concentrated form than many artists manage in acres of canvas.
In the 708 Michael Upton used photography and performance. Date Piece (1972) was two photographs of the corner of an office, identical except for the changed date on a desk calendar. Two Men (1978), a work performed with Peter Lloyd Jones, took the form of an unspoken conversation from either side of a table. The two men moved obiects around, rather like a

chess game. Time and space were activated by what can best be described as a series of meticulous
' gestures.
This quality is still to the fore in Upton‘s paintings. Brush strokes are discrete. Earthy, ochery, green-grey oil paint, thinly applied over pencil on board, diverts the viewers sensual response into a consideration of observation. Many of the works are in two parts, the first drawing squared-up and repeated with minor alterations on colour, more a result one feels of being painted at a different time, than a wilful alteration. The images themselves have the feel of urban snapshots: a bar scene, people waiting for the underground, an abandoned car. Occasionally a more ‘arty' reference creeps in: a studio scene, or a still-life. Upton has never been part of the noisy hype of the art-world, despite showing regularly and internationally. Instead he has, through his work, his teaching and his integrity, attracted something of a cult following. it’s surprising to think that this is the first time his work has been seen in Scotland.
