In 1973, John Brownlie‘s very promising future at full-back effectively vanished as a result of a broken leg against the Fifers‘ player, Printy, and in January 1984 Hibs were embarrassed by a replay defeat in the Scottish Cup.

At test! To the dismay ol Old Firm tans and the unbounded loy ol punters everywhere, the big two Glasgow sides will lace each other in the lourth round oi the Scottish Cup. Until this year, there seemed more chance at Ian Ferguson lolnlng Mensa or M Billy McNelll surviving 24 hours without using the words ‘Verra verra', than there was at the two clubs being drawn against each other in the cup.
The beliel that Celtic and Rangers manage to avoid each other In the Scottish Cup Is no mere myth spread by less successlul teams. Oi the lllteen occasions that they have both made It through to the semi-Ilnals sInce1946, they have only been drawn against each other twice. A twist at late so improbable that even Thomas Hardy would have been ashamed oi It.
Naturally, the SFA have always maintained that it was divine intervention which separated the teams. Ol course they deny the fabled hot and cold balls that, according to lollrlore, are used when making the draw. To your average punter however,
it appeared ratherthat it was a complete lack ol balls on the part at the SEA (tearing a llnai without either) that kept the teams apart. Although, Rangers' recent insistence on going out in the third round to teams like Hamilton Accles haven't helped their chances at playing their great Glasgow rivals.
Celtic's season is slipping away last and their tans, huddled round the bedside alternately muttering words ol condolence or rolling against late and Jack ‘Blscuit Tln' McGlnn, will be praying lor signs M a revival. Meanwhile, the ‘Gers can do little wrong at the moment. McCoIst and the chameleon-like Johnston are looking particularly sharp while ‘Smaclt-man’ has made a big Impact In midfield. Yet, Celtic are notoriously hard to beat when on their uppers. So, all they need to do is get a man sent oil early on and we could have a great match on our hands. (Ross Parsons)
