Masks and Puppets from the Caricature Theatre Collection, Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre, Glasgow. It is a little unsettling to meet Jane Phillips and to realise that she was most likely responsible for many hours oi your own childhood entertainment. Belore her nineteen years as director oi Cardili’s Caricature Theatre Company, she spent ten years as a ireelance puppeteer in lilms and TV, pulling the strings tor Muiiin the Mule and others. Absorbing as this exhibition is, it comes as the sad result oi the complete withdrawal oi the Welsh Arts Council's grant to Caricature in 1984, and the consequent collapse oi the company.
Unable to continue within a creative unit, Phillips has been lorced to celebrate past glories not in perlormance, but by display.
And glorious it is. Situated at one end of an unlikely-looking residential street, the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre has given over one room lor its debut exhibition. Like walking into a giant toy cupboard, you are greeted by two decades worth at puppets sitting in tableaux, dangling lrom hangers and perching on window ledges.
Caricature - who catered ior adults as well as children-were distinguishable by no single style. Instead they developed each show from a lresh design in a creative process from which all theatre practitioners could learn. The designer would specify the style and it was up to the company to make it work. Thus in one iairly small room we come across all manner at puppets: lull-scale bare-chested gods, a ‘black theatre’ papertown, delightiully naive rope children, a dog and its look-alike owner, human masks and ominous wire ligures.
Take time to work out how each production must have titted together and you’ll iind this a iascinating exhibition. The greatest shame is that the puppets are not being put to their intended use. (Mark Fisher)
