Stall Exhibition, Glasgow School of Art. Glasgow School of Art, leaving aside its status as a monument to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, also plays host to a community oi prolessional artists. Full-time and part-time members at stall engage in a broad spectrum 01 creative activities, ranging from traditional areas such as painting and sculpture, to the more recent disciplines ol environmental art and photography.
In the past, the various departments have presented theirwork independently of one another: a practice which has resulted in a regular sequence at small, particular presentations. This year, however, is 1990, and the call to arms has led the college to prepare an elaborate series at exhibitions, aimed at describing their scope and inlluences as the new decade emerges. The obvious place to begin such a venture is with the stall themselves. The current exhibition, simply called ‘Stall exhibition 1990', comprehensively illustrates the interests and directions to which the students have access.
Leaving aside the intrinsic value of the work, it might be worth pausing to rellect on the sheer variety ol the
STAFF PEEPSHGIN
current display. There are no less
than 72 artists on show here, all at some reputation, whose work spans the concerns at something like lilteen separate disciplines. The range 01 styles and techniques is enormous, and it is unlikely that such a venture would be leasible lor any other Glasgow venue.
Good or bad? Well, despite the obvious attractions of having so many artists represented under the same rool, there are pillalls. 0i these, the most pressing is that ol under-representation. It requires a lot of space to do justice to the work at 72 artists, and in a mid-term art school it simply wasn’t available. Murphy’s law applies almost as a matter at course: your lavourite artist only has one work on display, and without a catalogue, the only means at lurther introduction is by way at purchase or matriculation. It might have been betterto have waited until summer, when extra space would have been available.
Having said that, however, there can be no doubting the quality at the work on oller. It's worth going along, it only to get hold ol a list lorlurther reference. But be prepared tor a lair degree ol lrustration. (Philip Kingsley)
