Giacchomo Casanova Wed 14 & Wed 21 Feb. 7—10pm. £4 (£3 members). These two Performance Exchange workshops for professional performers are the latest stage in a five-year project by Alan Lyddiard. The TAG director will be leading these partly devised. partly scripted classes which are based around the life and reputation of Casanova. C umbernauld season is Stephen Grecnhorn’s new play about a New Town woman whose principles are put to the test when her employers attempt to bribe her with a trip to Japan in exchange for keeping quiet about dodgy health and safety standards. The script has already won third prize in London Weekend Television‘s national Plays On Stage competition. so hopes are running high for this production which is going to tour Scotland after its initial run. After Greenhorn‘s comic drama. Cumbernauld Theatre have plans for new plays by Ann Marie Di Mambro. Tom McGrath and Peter Nardini. See Preview.

Johnny Belinda Wed 14—Sat 17 Feb. 7.30pm. £3 (£1.50). A Scottish farming community in Northern Canada is the setting for Elmer Harris‘ play about a profoundly deaf girl known as the ‘Dummy'. Betty Milne directs East Kilbride Rep Theatre in this brave play about the victimisation of people with handicaps.

A double-bill of absurdist Ionesco plays. Frenzy For Two itself is directed by Robin Wilson whose own Internal Injuries was recently seen at the Traverse Theatre. Edinburgh. The play is a domestic drama in which a man and a woman fight over trivia while a full-scale battle rages outside. The second play is Maid To Marry. an exploration of male domination and exploitation by means of a seemingly innocuous park bench conversation. Neil Cairns directs. Both plays are performed by the Actors‘ Lab. I GLASGOW UNIVERSITY 68 Hillhead Street.

The first is billed as a comedy. the second a comedy of manners. The AIDS Show Until Sat 10 Feb. 7.30pm. Sat Mat 2.15pm. Drama Studio. West Quad. Free. Not normally considered to be a laugh-a-minute subject. the effect of the discovery of AIDS on the San Francisco gay community is given a warm-hearted and humorous treatment. The show examines how the problem of AIDS has been handled by evangelicals. media presenters. nurses and sufferers in an attempt to wipe clean the popular presumptions about the disease.

Victorian Gothic splendour of Bute Hall. The productions aims to renew interest in Rob Roy’s dramatic vigour and historical worth.

Mistero Bulio Tue 13—Sat 18 Feb. Robbie Coltrane in Dario Fo‘s one-man comedy based on the first medieval mysteries. Sideswipes at world religion . power and politics. The last Dario Fo that Morag Fullerton directed for Borderline was Trumpets and Raspberries. a hilarious production which Fo himself rated as the best outside of Italy. See Touring and Feature.
The Mikado Tue 20—Sat 24 Feb. 7.30pm. Sat Mat 3pm. £2—£5. The Savoy Club make their contribution to the City of Culture in the form of Gilbert and Sullivan‘s celebrated Operetta. The proceeds of this production will go to Guide Dogs For The Blind and two dogs will be presented on stage on Sat 24 Feb. I trust this doesn’t contravene the local authority‘s regulations on performing animals.
