First seen last season sharing a double bill with Scottish Ballet and ‘Petrushka', ‘Oedipus Rex’ is back on the Theatre Royal boards with a new partner, Bartok’s ‘Ouke Bluebeard's Castle’. Both designed by Stelanos Lazaridis, they make a visually stunning pair. The impact oi ‘Oedipus”s set- a compartmentalised upended box- costumes and, especially, lighting has lost none at its power since the lirst time around. Sadly, the music does not seem to have lared so well. The new Oedipus, John Treleaven, is overly harsh at times and, orchestrally, Stravinsky’s score has lost its bite under conductor Vachtang Matchavariani. Perhaps he was daving himsell lor ‘Bluebeard’, which brought superb playing lrom the Scottish Opera orchestra. On stage,

Kathryn Harries, a gilted actress, is magnilicent as Judith. Vocally, her lull, rich tone is well matched by Monte Jalte’s Bluebeard and, dramatically too, both are totally convincing. Making his debut as solo director, Lazaridis has made Bluebeard’s castle a chilling, eerie place, the seven doors at the tale achieved by long shalts ol ditlerent-coloured light cutting through the blackness, rather than actual doors. It is a production which brings out the complexities at power within a relationship and has the gripping power itsell to leave its audience emotionally exhausted.
